Overview
Schlagzeilen is a German-language BDSM magazine published by Charon-Verlag in Hamburg. First issued in November 1988 with a print run of 200 copies, it grew out of the newsletter of the SM-Sündikat Hamburg, Germany's first open SM group, and quickly became a commercial publication and one of the central magazines of the German-speaking BDSM subculture. It appears bimonthly and contains photographs, short stories, scene news, book reviews, a changing focus topic, and other editorial articles, largely contributed by readers. A supplement formerly listed BDSM regulars' tables and a calendar of events; this content has since moved into the magazine itself, as has the insert of the "Non-consensual" magazine from the Sklavenzentrale internet forum. Since 2010 the criminal psychologist and author Lydia Benecke has been a regular columnist; other columnists have included Irena Böttcher, Hera Delgado, Jana Feuerbach (writing as Nayeli Irkalla), Apollonia, and, since 2017, Luci van Org. The magazine is distributed primarily through specialist retailers and mail order, and is also available at many BDSM regulars' tables. Its ISSN is 0948-6941. Total circulation was about 7,200 copies in 2000, about 4,000 in 2010, and 2,000 since 2017. The publisher's website, schlagzeilen.com, also operates a BDSM online shop and offers a bondage project with workshops and seminars. The magazine describes itself as fighting "for a right to pain and social acceptance" and has seen itself as giving a voice to the scene since its founding. The taz newspaper called it, on its 25th anniversary, the "most important German-language medium of the scene" and a "mix of eroticism and advice literature."
History
Schlagzeilen was originally the central organ of the SM-Sündikat Hamburg, Germany's first open SM group. It quickly became commercial and one of the central magazines of the German-speaking BDSM subculture. The first issue appeared in November 1988 in a print run of 200 copies. The magazine was founded by, among others, Jan P. Scheu. From issue two, Geli Maaß joined; in 1990, from issue seven, Matthias T. J. Grimme came on board. Other staff have included Ancilla Hirsch, Roland Hardtke, Ana Schwarz, Heico Linke, and Peter Koschnick. The first Schlagzeilen issues were produced on a typewriter. Later, black-and-white photographs were taken, which were then also shot and printed in color. The graphic decorations and logos were designed by Frank Behnsen and Peter Bolz. In 1993 Schlagzeilen published a calendar with images by the photographer ToKo. In January 1993 several editors of the magazine appeared on the talk show named after Hans Meiser, and further appearances followed, including on Alfred Biolek's show. A large part of the editorial team was also seen in the episode "Unter deutschen Dächern – Das soll Liebe sein?". Since issue 82 in August 2005, Schlagzeilen has sought to attract younger authors with the series "Junge Wilde". Since 2010 the criminal psychologist and writer Lydia Benecke has been a regular columnist. Other columnists have been or are the authors Irena Böttcher, Hera Delgado, Jana Feuerbach (under the name Nayeli Irkalla), and Apollonia. Since 2017 Luci van Org has also been a columnist. The magazine is published by Charon-Verlag in Hamburg. Its ISSN is 0948-6941. Circulation was about 7,200 copies in 2000, about 4,000 in 2010, and 2,000 since 2017. The magazine is distributed primarily through specialist retailers and mail order, and is also available at many BDSM regulars' tables.
