Overview

SCONTEL is a Moscow-based superconducting nanotechnology company founded in 2004 as a spin-off from the Radiophysics Lab at Moscow State Pedagogical University. The company emerged from research on hot-electron phenomena in thin superconducting films, which led to the development of Hot-Electron-Bolometers (HEB) and later to the discovery of the single-photon response of very narrow and thin NbN strips, creating a new class of detectors known as SSPD (Superconducting Single-Photon Detectors). SCONTEL designs, manufactures, and sells advanced scientific instrumentation, including SSPDs, SNSPDs, HEBs, and cryogenic systems. Its product lines include multimode large-area SSPDs, ultra-low noise SSPDs, photon-number-resolving SSPDs, and matrix single-photon detectors. The company serves more than 300 customers across 38 countries, with representatives in China, Japan, and the USA. SCONTEL's team includes professors, PhDs, and students, and the company has published over 50 research articles, including the first demonstrations of single-photon detection with SSPDs. It continues to conduct scientific research to improve its products and their implementation in modern experiments.

History

SCONTEL was founded in 2004 by Prof. Gregory Goltsman, his students, and co-workers as a spin-off from the Radiophysics Lab at Moscow State Pedagogical University. The company's origins lie in comprehensive, in-depth research on hot-electron phenomena in thin superconducting films, which led to the development of Hot-Electron-Bolometers (HEB) and later to the discovery of the single-photon response of very narrow and thin NbN strips. This discovery, in turn, led to the creation of a new class of detectors – SSPD (Superconducting Single-Photon Detectors). For practically two decades, SCONTEL's team has been working on improving detector performance and systematically optimizing receiving systems to satisfy the market's demand for first-class scientific instrumentation. The company has established representatives in China, Japan, and the USA, and has developed relationships with customers from 38 countries. It has published over 50 research articles, including the first demonstrations of single-photon detection with SSPDs. SCONTEL has more than 300 customers worldwide and continues to grow. Its team includes professors, PhDs, and students, and the company continuously conducts scientific research related to SSPD and HEB technologies and their implementation in modern experiments.
