Overview
The Selfpublisher-Verband (Self-Publishing Association) is a German association founded in 2015 in Frankfurt am Main by eight authors, including Matthias Matting, Roland Kirsch, Heike Fröhling, Andrea Becker, Daniel Isberner, and Peter Bourauel. It represents the interests of German-language self-publishing authors, both in public discourse and at the political level. The association is headquartered in Frankfurt am Main and serves members in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The association's mission is to promote the exchange among self-publishing authors, facilitate their daily work, and improve the acceptance of self-published books. It engages in lobbying, having registered as an interest group with the German Bundestag and the EU. It is a member of the Netzwerk Autorenrechte and the Deutsche Literaturkonferenz, and supports the Bundesverband Leseförderung. Since its founding, it has maintained a presence at book fairs and other gatherings with its own booth and often an informational stage program. Since September 2018, the Selfpublisher-Verband has acted as publisher of the trade magazine 'der selfpublisher', published by Uschtrin Verlag, which members receive four times a year. In April 2023, the association announced a rebranding with a new logo, color design, and modernized website, first presented to the public at the Leipzig Book Fair 2023. The association also organizes the Selfpublishing-Buchpreis (formerly Deutscher Selfpublishing-Preis), a literary award for professional self-published titles. From 2017 to 2019, it awarded the Deutscher Selfpublishing-Preis in cooperation with the Marketing- und Verlagsservice des Buchhandels (MVB). After MVB withdrew in 2020 due to the Corona crisis, the association continued the award under the new name Selfpublishing-Buchpreis, announcing winners at the Selfpublishing Festival on 22 November 2020. The award has expanded to include categories such as fiction, children's and young adult, non-fiction/guide, and special categories like poetry and short prose. Winners are announced at the Frankfurt Book Fair. With over 1,800 members, the Selfpublisher-Verband provides a community for self-publishers, offering networking opportunities, further education through its online academy with over 100 hours of video material, discounts on services, and visibility through book fairs and media presence. It positions itself as a strong voice for self-publishers, advocating for quality and professionalism in self-published books.
History
The Selfpublisher-Verband was founded in 2015 at the Haus des Buches of the Börsenverein in Frankfurt am Main by eight authors, including Matthias Matting, Roland Kirsch, Heike Fröhling, Andrea Becker, Daniel Isberner, and Peter Bourauel. Matthias Matting served as chairman from February 2015 to December 2017. The association was established to represent the interests of German-language self-publishing authors, promote exchange among authors, facilitate their daily work, and improve the acceptance of self-published books. Lobbying became a core activity, with the association registering as an interest group with the German Bundestag and the EU. It joined the Netzwerk Autorenrechte and the Deutsche Literaturkonferenz, and supported the Bundesverband Leseförderung. Since its founding, it has been present at book fairs and other gatherings with its own booth and often an informational stage program. In 2017, the association, in cooperation with the Marketing- und Verlagsservice des Buchhandels (MVB), launched the Deutscher Selfpublishing-Preis, a literary award for professional self-published titles, presented annually at the Frankfurt Book Fair. Initially, there were two categories: a jury prize and an audience prize. In 2019, the categories were changed to fiction & children's/young adult and non-fiction/guide. The prize was endowed with 6,000 euros per category. Due to the Corona crisis, MVB withdrew in 2020. The association continued the award under the new name Selfpublishing-Buchpreis, announcing the winning titles on 22 November 2020 during the Selfpublishing Festival. A third category was introduced, distinguishing between fiction and children's/young adult. In 2021, a special category for poetry was added. The 2021 Selfpublishing-Buchpreis was endowed with a total of 24,000 euros, including non-cash prizes such as an audiobook production and marketing packages, with 5,000 euros per main category and 1,000 euros in the special category. Winners were announced at the award gala during the 73rd Frankfurt Book Fair on 23 October 2021. The award has continued with categories for fiction, children's/young adult, non-fiction/guide, and special categories like poetry and short prose. Winners are announced at the Frankfurt Book Fair. Since September 2018, the Selfpublisher-Verband has acted as publisher of the trade magazine 'der selfpublisher', published by Uschtrin Verlag, which members receive four times a year. In April 2023, the association announced a rebranding with a new logo, new color design, and modernized website, first presented to the public at the Leipzig Book Fair 2023. The association continues to represent over 1,800 members, offering networking, further education through its online academy with over 100 hours of video material, discounts, and visibility through book fairs and media presence.
