Overview

Sendy is a cloud storage and file transfer service that originated as the Japanese-market cloud offering built on top of SendAnywhere, the peer-to-peer file transfer technology developed by South Korean startup Estmob. Estmob was founded in July 2012 by Yoonsik Oh, a former ESTsoft engineer who won an internal venture competition with the idea for a simpler cross-device file transfer tool. SendAnywhere launched the same year and grew rapidly, reaching millions of monthly active users and tens of millions of downloads across Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, the United States, and the United Kingdom. In April 2019, Estmob established a Japanese subsidiary, Sendy Inc. (株式会社センディ), and in June 2019 launched the Sendy cloud service, which combined SendAnywhere's transfer capabilities with online storage and Microsoft 365 integration for editing Office documents in the browser. Sendy offered both personal and business plans, with paid tiers Sendy PRO and Sendy Business introduced in 2020. The service integrated with Rakuten ID for Japanese users. Rakuten had been an early investor in Estmob through Rakuten Ventures, participating in seed and later funding rounds. In 2021, Rakuten Mobile acquired Estmob and its Japanese subsidiary Sendy Inc., making them wholly owned subsidiaries and integrating them into Rakuten Symphony, the group's telecom platform business. In 2022, Estmob was renamed Rakuten Symphony Korea, Inc. and placed under Rakuten Symphony Co., Ltd. On January 25, 2023, the Sendy service was rebranded as Rakuten Drive. In 2024, Rakuten Drive began full-scale provision in Japan with Rakuten ID integration, and Rakuten Symphony Korea became the global operating entity for Rakuten Drive. As of the mid-2020s, Rakuten Drive reported 50 million downloads from 230 countries, 7 million monthly active users, 390 million annual file transfers, and 44 petabytes of traffic per year. The service is positioned as a secure, fast cloud storage and transfer tool for both individuals and businesses, with features such as fine-grained permission controls, Microsoft Online editing, and integrations with email and messaging platforms like Slack and Chatwork. The original Sendy brand name is no longer used for the service, having been fully replaced by Rakuten Drive.

History

Sendy's history is intertwined with that of its parent technology, SendAnywhere, and its developer Estmob. Estmob was founded in July 2012 in South Korea by Yoonsik Oh, a former engineer at ESTsoft, the country's largest software company. Oh's idea for a simple cross-device file transfer service won ESTsoft's internal venture competition, leading him to establish Estmob and launch SendAnywhere the same year. The service allowed users to transfer files between devices via a web browser or mobile app, with a free tier supporting files up to 10GB and a paid tier, Send Anywhere Email Add-on, offering larger transfers and ad removal. SendAnywhere gained traction quickly. By 2013 it had 100,000 monthly active users (MAU); by 2014, 500,000 MAU and $1 million in seed funding from Rakuten Ventures. In 2015, MAU reached 1 million and Estmob signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Samsung Printers. The following year, MAU hit 2 million, Android downloads surpassed 5 million, and a partnership with Samsung Galaxy saw SendAnywhere pre-installed on Galaxy S7 devices. Estmob also raised $6 million from Rakuten Ventures in 2016. In 2017, MAU reached 3 million and an API partnership was signed with POLARIS Office. By 2018, MAU stood at 3.5 million, cumulative downloads exceeded 20 million, Send Anywhere PLUS was released, Android downloads passed 10 million, and an MOU was signed with Naver. In April 2019, Estmob established a Japanese subsidiary, Sendy Inc. (株式会社センディ), and in June 2019 launched the Sendy cloud service. Sendy built on SendAnywhere's transfer technology by adding cloud storage and Microsoft 365 integration, allowing users to edit Office documents directly in the browser. It offered personal and business plans, with paid tiers Sendy PRO and Sendy Business introduced in 2020. The service integrated with Rakuten ID for Japanese users. In 2019, Estmob also raised $3 million from Rakuten Ventures, bringing cumulative funding to $10 million, and cumulative downloads surpassed 30 million. Rakuten had been an early investor in Estmob through Rakuten Ventures since 2014. As of the mid-2020s, Rakuten Drive reported 50 million downloads from 230 countries, 7 million MAU, 390 million annual file transfers, and 44 petabytes of traffic per year. The Sendy brand name is no longer used for the service, having been fully replaced by Rakuten Drive.
