Overview
Shapiro Beer (Hebrew: בירה שפירא) is an Israeli craft brewery founded in 2011 in Beit Shemesh by brothers Itzik and Danny Shapiro. The brewery positions itself as a 'Jerusalem beer,' with its logo based on the emblem of Jerusalem. It began as a home-brewing project in a small Jerusalem basement, using plastic buckets and improvised tubing, and grew into a commercial brewery producing over 20,000 liters of beer per month. The founders were later joined by Yochai Kudler, who had established the Negev Brewery in Kiryat Gat. Shapiro Beer initially produced two styles, a Pale Ale and an Oatmeal Stout, and by 2018 added a Wheat Beer and a seasonal Winter Ale. Its products were first marketed mainly in Jerusalem, with some distribution in Tel Aviv. In June 2021, Tempo Beverages acquired a 50.1% controlling stake in the brewery. The brewery has won awards, including Best Israeli Beer for its Pale Ale. Shapiro Beer emphasizes balanced flavors with clear character and a universal appeal, encapsulated in its slogan 'Simply beer. Simply Shapiro.'
History
Shapiro Beer was founded in 2011 in Beit Shemesh by brothers Itzik and Danny Shapiro, residents of Jerusalem who had been home-brewing for several years. Itzik Shapiro trained for a few months at Left Hand Brewing in Colorado. They were later joined by Yochai Kudler, who had founded the Negev Brewery in Kiryat Gat. The brewery started in a small Jerusalem basement with plastic buckets and improvised tubing. The founders would go out into the streets of Jerusalem with a cooler of beer, offering tastings at markets, bars, and restaurants to gauge reactions. Positive feedback encouraged them to pursue brewing more seriously. Over the years they added more 'brothers' to the team and opened a real brewery in Jerusalem, the city where they grew up. The brewery produces over 20,000 liters of beer per month. Initially, they produced two styles: Pale Ale and Oatmeal Stout. By 2018, a third style, Wheat Beer, was added, and a fourth, Winter Ale, is produced seasonally. The products were first marketed mainly in Jerusalem, but also in a few places in Tel Aviv. The brewery brands itself as 'Jerusalem beer,' and its logo is based on the emblem of the city of Jerusalem. In June 2021, Tempo Beverages acquired 50.1% of the brewery's shares, becoming its controlling shareholder. The brewery has won several awards, including Best Israeli Beer for its Pale Ale.
