Overview

Sierra Pacific Power Company is a historic Nevada electric and natural gas utility brand that today operates as part of NV Energy, Inc. The Sierra Pacific name traces back to the consolidation of several small northern Nevada power companies in the early twentieth century, and for most of that century it served Reno, Sparks, Carson City, Elko and surrounding rural communities. Its service territory covered a vast, sparsely populated region of northern Nevada, where it built and operated generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure, and later added natural gas distribution in the Reno-Sparks area. In 1999 Sierra Pacific Power Company became a subsidiary of the newly formed holding company Sierra Pacific Resources, which also owned Nevada Power Company in southern Nevada. The holding company later rebranded as NV Energy, and the Sierra Pacific Power operating name was gradually folded into the NV Energy brand. Today the combined NV Energy system serves a service area covering more than 44,000 square miles, providing electricity to about 2.4 million electric customers across Nevada and natural gas to more than 145,000 customers in the Reno-Sparks area. Its communities include Las Vegas, Reno-Sparks, Henderson and Elko. NV Energy, and therefore the former Sierra Pacific Power operations, is owned by Berkshire Hathaway Energy, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway. The utility is regulated by the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada. Sierra Pacific Power Company remains a recognizable legacy brand in northern Nevada utility history, even though customer-facing operations now use the NV Energy name.

History

Sierra Pacific Power Company grew out of the early electrification of northern Nevada. In the early decades of the twentieth century, a patchwork of small local power companies served Reno, Sparks, Carson City and mining towns across the region. These were gradually consolidated, and by the late 1920s the Sierra Pacific Power Company had emerged as the dominant electric utility for northern Nevada. The company built and operated hydroelectric, coal and later natural gas-fired generation, along with the transmission and distribution lines needed to reach isolated communities across a service territory of tens of thousands of square miles. For much of the twentieth century Sierra Pacific Power was the principal electric utility in northern Nevada, and it also became the natural gas distributor for the Reno-Sparks area. Its service territory included Reno, Sparks, Carson City, Elko, Fallon and many rural communities, while southern Nevada — including Las Vegas — was served by the separate Nevada Power Company. In 1999 the two utilities were brought under a single holding company, Sierra Pacific Resources. Sierra Pacific Power Company continued as the northern Nevada operating subsidiary, while Nevada Power Company served the south. The holding company later changed its name to NV Energy, reflecting its statewide footprint. Under NV Energy, the legacy Sierra Pacific Power operations were integrated into a unified brand, though the legal entity and regulatory filings continued to reference the historic name for some years. In 2013 Berkshire Hathaway Energy, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, acquired NV Energy, making Sierra Pacific Power Company part of one of the largest utility groups in the United States. Today NV Energy describes a service area covering over 44,000 square miles, providing electricity to about 2.4 million electric customers throughout Nevada and natural gas to more than 145,000 customers in the Reno-Sparks area. The communities it names include Las Vegas, Reno-Sparks, Henderson and Elko. The Sierra Pacific Power name survives mainly as a historical and legal legacy within that larger system.
