Overview

SIMONA AG (stylised as SIMONA) is a German plastics industry company headquartered in Kirn, Rhineland-Palatinate. It develops and produces thermoplastic semi-finished products — sheets, rods, profiles and welding rods — as well as pipes, fittings and finished parts. Because of their high resistance to aggressive chemicals, these products are used above all in chemical apparatus and plant engineering, but also serve the automotive, mechanical engineering, life science, building construction and advertising industries. The company describes itself as a leading company in the plastics-processing industry and markets itself with the slogan "A company like a friend!" Its product range includes PVC-U FM 4910, CELPLAST PVC rigid foam sheets, and SIMOClearWeld pipe-joining technology, and it operates a CAD portal for construction data. SIMONA traces its origins to the leather factory "Carl Simon Söhne", founded in Kirn in 1857. The company achieved international reach in the early 20th century, but after the Second World War the leather industry declined. First experiments in plastics production began in 1956; by 1965 revenue from plastics products exceeded leather for the first time, and leather production was discontinued in 1973. The name Simona was introduced in 1965, and in 1988 the GmbH became today's Aktiengesellschaft. The company celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2007. SIMONA is publicly listed and traded on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. As of 31 December 2024, its shareholder structure comprised the Simona Aktien Pool (54.79%), Kreissparkasse Biberach (15.04%), Rossmann Beteiligungs-GmbH (11.42%), Simona Vermögensverwaltung der Belegschaft (10.00%) and free float (8.75%). The company has expanded internationally, with production sites in Kirn and Ringsheim (Germany), Litvínov (Czech Republic, since 2009), Jiangmen (China, since 2010), and Archbald, Newcomerstown and Findlay in the United States. It also maintains sales offices in France, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Poland, Switzerland, Spain, the Czech Republic and the United States, plus a dealer network in Latin America. Recent acquisitions include Laminations Inc. and Boltaron Performance Products (2014), Premier Material Concepts, LLC (2018) and PEAK Pipe Systems Limited (2022). In its 2026 half-year financial press information, SIMONA reported group revenue up 12.5%, sales volume up 9.8%, and EBIT nearly doubled to EUR 31.0 million with an EBIT margin of 9.1%.

History

The company that is today SIMONA AG originated in the leather factory "Carl Simon Söhne", founded in Kirn in 1857. In the early 20th century, "Carl Simon Söhne" achieved international reach. After the end of the Second World War, the leather industry steadily lost importance, and the company sought new business fields in plastics production. The first experiments in plastics manufacturing began in 1956. In 1965, revenue from plastics products exceeded revenue from leather for the first time, and the company name Simona was introduced in the same year. Leather production was discontinued in 1973. In 1988, the GmbH was converted into today's Aktiengesellschaft (stock corporation). In 2007, the company celebrated its 150th anniversary. International expansion continued in the 21st century. In 2009, a production facility in Litvínov, Czech Republic, went into full operation, and in the same year another plant was opened in Jiangmen, China. In 2011, a subsidiary was founded in Russia. In 2013, Simona AG received the Top 100 Innovator Award. In 2014, the company acquired the two US companies Laminations Inc. and Boltaron Performance Products. In 2015, the new technology centre in Kirn was opened. On 1 August 2018, the US company Premier Material Concepts, LLC (PMC) was acquired. On 28 February 2022, the company acquired PEAK Pipe Systems Limited from Chesterfield, a manufacturer of polyethylene pipe systems. Today SIMONA develops and produces thermoplastic semi-finished products — sheets, rods, profiles and welding rods — as well as pipes, fittings and finished parts. Because of their high resistance to aggressive chemicals, these products are used primarily in chemical apparatus and plant engineering, but also in the automotive industry, mechanical engineering, life science, building construction and advertising. Production sites are located in Kirn (administration, Plants I and II, main warehouse), Ringsheim (Plant III), Litvínov in the Czech Republic (since 2009), Jiangmen in China (since 2010), Archbald, Pennsylvania, USA (since January 2014), Newcomerstown, Ohio, USA (since October 2014) and Findlay, Ohio, USA (since August 2018). The company also has sales offices in France, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Poland, Switzerland, Spain, the Czech Republic and the United States, as well as a dealer network in Latin America. SIMONA AG is a listed German company whose corporate governance is determined primarily by the German Stock Corporation Act (AktG) and the German Corporate Governance Code (DCGK). Its share capital amounts to EUR 15,500,000.00 divided into 6,000,000 shares. The company is headquartered in Kirn/Nahe.
