Overview
Sinergise is a Slovenian geographic information systems (GIS) company that builds large turn-key geospatial systems in the fields of cloud GIS, agriculture and real-estate administration. It was established in 2008 as a spin-off from Cosylab, a company known for technology used in large physics experiments, in order to develop enterprise-level solutions for managing spatial data, especially for land administration and agriculture processes. Its roots go back to Giselle, described as one of the first world-scale distributed GIS editing frameworks, built in 2003 within Cosylab. Sinergise serves large governmental clients across Europe and Africa, including the United Kingdom, France, Slovenia, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, the Czech Republic, Azerbaijan, Moldova, Nigeria, Ghana, Tanzania and Mauritius. According to the company, more than 2 million people annually use its tools, and its technology helps manage more than 50 million property records and more than 500 million EUR of transactions annually. Its best-known product is Sentinel Hub, a service-oriented earth-observation infrastructure that hides the complexity of archiving, processing and distributing satellite imagery behind standard web services. Sentinel Hub provides near-instant access to high-resolution Sentinel-2 imagery and supports building earth-observation products such as vegetation indices. Sinergise won the overall 2016 Copernicus Masters competition with Sentinel Hub, after winning the T-Systems Open Telekom Cloud Challenge. The company is also involved in the Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem and offers the Copernicus Browser. Sinergise's solutions span remote sensing and machine learning, agriculture (including support for LPIS and IACS implementation), land administration and real-estate management, and GIS tools for working with spatial data. It is now owned by Planet Labs, the Earth-imaging company, following an enterprise agreement between Planet and the Slovenian government to support agriculture, urban planning and disaster management.
History
Sinergise's history begins within Cosylab, a Slovenian company renowned for technology used in large physics experiments such as particle accelerators and fusion reactors. In 2003, a world-scale distributed GIS editing framework called Giselle was built within Cosylab, using technology for the distribution of millions of event data per second. This framework became the foundation for enterprise-level spatial data management solutions, especially for land administration and agriculture processes. By 2008, the GIS business had reached a sustainable level, and Sinergise spun off from Cosylab to form an individual entity. The new company focused on building large turn-key geospatial systems in cloud GIS, agriculture and real-estate administration. Over the following 12 years, Sinergise built solutions for large governmental clients in Europe (United Kingdom, France, Slovenia, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Czech Republic, Azerbaijan, Moldova) and Africa (Nigeria, Ghana, Tanzania, Mauritius), almost all of which were still being supported as of the company's own account. Its tools were used by more than 2 million people annually, and its technology helped manage more than 50 million property records and more than 500 million EUR of transactions annually. A major turning point came with the launch of the Copernicus programme's Sentinel satellites, which promised free and open high-resolution data worldwide. Sinergise realized that existing technologies could not handle the massive amount of data, and a group within the company set out to solve the problem, resulting in Sentinel Hub. Sentinel Hub hides the complexity of archiving, processing and distribution of satellite data behind standard web services that can be integrated into desktop, web or mobile mapping applications. In 2016, Sinergise won the T-Systems Open Telekom Cloud Challenge at the Copernicus Masters competition and went on to be named the overall winner of the international Earth observation competition organized by the European Space Agency and AZO. Sinergise continued to develop its earth-observation infrastructure, including a service-oriented system with automated archiving, a rolling archive of multi-spectral data, full-resolution previews over the web and time-lapse functionality. The company became involved in the Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem and offers the Copernicus Browser. It also works on remote sensing and machine learning, agriculture applications, and GIS tools. Sinergise is now owned by Planet Labs, the Earth-imaging company, and in January 2026 Planet signed an enterprise agreement with the Slovenian government to support agriculture, urban planning and disaster management.
