Overview

SmartLynx Australia was the name used by the Australian regional airline Skytrans during a short rebranding period associated with Avia Solutions Group’s SmartLynx airline family. The underlying business originated in Cairns in October 1990, when David and Sue Barnard established Skytrans as a charter operator. It began scheduled services in 1993 and subsequently developed a network linking regional Queensland, Cape York, the Gulf country and the Torres Strait. Over its history, the airline combined several operating models. It provided regular public transport services on regulated regional routes, charter flights for corporate and resource-sector customers, and ACMI services in which aircraft, crew, maintenance and insurance are supplied to another operator. Its bases and operational locations included Cairns, Rockhampton, Townsville, Brisbane and Horn Island. The airline’s remote-area role made it an important transport link for communities that have limited access to larger commercial airports. Skytrans expanded through a series of regional developments. It merged with AirSwift Aviation in 2000, assumed services to Cooktown and Karumba from MacAir Airlines in 2001, and entered competition with QantasLink on the Cairns–Townsville route in 2005. In December 2006, Australian Aviation Holdings acquired the company from its founders; Skytrans and Queensland Regional Airlines were subsequently brought together under the Skytrans Regional brand. The business encountered serious financial pressure in late 2014. It reduced its workforce and fleet before entering voluntary administration and suspending flights on 2 January 2015. The airline attributed the difficulties to the exchange-rate environment, difficult operating conditions and the loss of several regulated Queensland routes. Skytrans resumed operations on 31 March 2015 under Collings Holdings Airlines, associated with Peter Collings and Johnathan Thurston. Avia Solutions Group announced its intention to acquire Skytrans in January 2024, with completion reported in March that year. The acquisition placed the Australian airline within a major international aviation-services group and supported plans to develop an Airbus A320-family ACMI operation of up to 20 aircraft, subject to demand. The proposed fleet strategy envisaged passenger-focused A319 and A320 operations, with possible future cargo activity using A321 freighters. From 24 June 2025 to 10 February 2026, the airline operated under the SmartLynx Australia name in an effort to align it with Avia Solutions Group’s SmartLynx-branded sister carriers. Following the collapse of SmartLynx Airlines and the group’s decision to divest the SmartLynx brand, the Australian operation returned to the Skytrans identity. Accordingly, SmartLynx Australia is best understood as a discontinued transitional brand rather than a separate airline founded independently from Skytrans. The underlying Skytrans operation has continued to combine scheduled regional services, charter flying and potential ACMI operations. It has also maintained commercial and community relationships in Queensland, including sponsorships and support for local sporting, health and community organisations. The airline’s historical identity remains closely associated with regional connectivity, remote-community access and aviation services for resource-sector customers.

History

Skytrans began in Cairns in October 1990 as a charter airline founded by David and Sue Barnard. Scheduled services followed in 1993, establishing the company as a regional carrier rather than solely a charter provider. Its early network focused on Queensland destinations and the practical transport needs of smaller communities. In November 2000, Skytrans merged with AirSwift Aviation, another Cairns-based regional operator. The following year it took over services to Cooktown and Karumba from MacAir Airlines. In January 2005, it began competing with QantasLink on the Cairns–Townsville route and operated from its own terminals in both cities. These developments expanded its scheduled presence while preserving its charter activities. Australian Aviation Holdings acquired Skytrans from its founders in December 2006. The company was subsequently combined with Queensland Regional Airlines, with operations associated with the Skytrans Regional brand. Over time, Skytrans continued serving regional Queensland, the Gulf country, Cape York and the Torres Strait, while also undertaking charter work for corporate and mining customers. The airline entered a difficult period in late 2014. It attempted to reduce costs by cutting its workforce by more than half and reducing a fleet that had included Dash 8-100 and Dash 8-300 aircraft. On 2 January 2015, it suspended operations after entering voluntary administration. Management cited a weak operating environment, adverse currency conditions and the loss of three regulated regional routes in Queensland. The suspension occurred shortly after the airline marked 25 years of Queensland service. Skytrans returned to the skies on 31 March 2015 under Collings Holdings Airlines, owned by Peter Collings, who was also associated with West Wing Aviation, and former rugby league player Johnathan Thurston. The revived company rebuilt its regional and charter activities and remained involved in scheduled services to remote Queensland locations. Avia Solutions Group announced an agreement to acquire Skytrans in January 2024, and the acquisition was completed in March. Under the new ownership, the airline was positioned for a possible expansion into Airbus A320-family ACMI flying. Plans announced in April 2024 contemplated a fleet of up to 20 aircraft, with passenger operations as the immediate priority and possible cargo development later. The company also pursued changes to its regional network. In October 2024, Skytrans and QantasLink announced a partnership concerning Lord Howe Island services. Skytrans was to acquire three Dash 8-200 aircraft and eventually take over the operation, while Qantas retained a codeshare role. In May 2025, Skytrans ended its service to 11 Torres Strait islands and retired its Cessna 208B Caravan aircraft; Northern Territory Air Services and Hinterland Aviation were identified as replacement operators for those communities. Between 24 June 2025 and 10 February 2026, Skytrans operated under the SmartLynx Australia name. The change was intended to align the airline with other SmartLynx-branded airlines within Avia Solutions Group. After the failure of SmartLynx Airlines and the group’s subsequent decision to divest the SmartLynx brand, the Australian carrier reverted to the Skytrans identity. SmartLynx Australia therefore represents a short-lived brand phase of Skytrans rather than a distinct operating history. The underlying airline continues to be associated with regional passenger transport, remote-area access, charter work and aviation-services opportunities.
