Overview

Smeg is an Italian household appliance brand that has designed innovative household appliances for everyday environments since 1948, with headquarters in Guastalla, Emilia Romagna. The Smeg Group operates five production plants in Italy and is recognised internationally as a proponent of excellence Made in Italy. Its product range spans major and small appliances, including ovens, hobs, refrigerators, dishwashers, washing machines and professional appliances for the hospitality sector.

History

Smeg was founded in 1948 by Vittorio Bertazzoni Sr as Smalterie Metallurgiche Emiliane Guastalla in Guastalla, near Reggio Emilia in Italy. Production of cookers began in 1955, reaching its peak with the presentation of the first Smeg brand cooker, Elisabeth, in 1956. In 1963 the company presented Leda, the first Smeg branded washing machine, following an increase in production capacity to include laundry appliances. In 1970 Niagara was released, described as the world's first 14-place setting dishwasher. Production of built-in appliances such as ovens and hobs began in 1971. In 1977 Franco Maria Ricci created the Smeg logo, incorporating references to the burners of a gas hob and the round knobs of an oven. In 1979 Smeg sponsored the Ferrari Formula 1 team. Between 1982 and 1985 Smeg began manufacturing professional ovens for cafes, delicatessens and restaurants, followed by professional dishwashers, and in 1985 the Smeg Instruments division opened, dedicated to hospitals and medical and dental laboratories. In 1985 the company also began working with architect Guido Canali to create ovens and hobs. In 1991 Smeg collaborated with architect Mario Bellini on ovens and hobs, and in 1995 began working with architect Renzo Piano, a collaboration that led to the production of hobs, ovens, fridges and the Smeg home garden. Smeg has designed innovative household appliances for all everyday environments since 1948, with headquarters in Guastalla, Emilia Romagna. The Smeg Group has 5 production plants in Italy and is recognised on an international scale as a mastermind of excellence Made in Italy.
