Overview

Sobaka.ru (Собака.ru) is a Russian monthly lifestyle magazine founded in Saint Petersburg in 1999. It is described as the first local glossy magazine in Saint Petersburg and is published by the publishing house ООО «Журналы и сайты „Фабрика контента „Точка Ру“». The magazine appears once a month and is one of the largest federal networks of city lifestyle glossies in Russia. The project was initiated by artist Anatoly Belkin, who brought in Veronika Belotserkovskaya (Antonysheva), then owner of an agency selling television airtime and an exclusive regional seller for the ORT channel, which sponsored the first issues. Belkin became editor and Belotserkovskaya publisher; in 2000 she founded the publishing house «Собака». The magazine deliberately avoided politics, crime and economics, focusing instead on private life, city life, portraits, culture and society. After early issues produced "for friends" and resembling an art publication, the format was made more commercial. Around 2005 Belkin left and Yana Miloradovskaya became editor-in-chief. The website launched in 2006, and in 2008 the publication expanded beyond Saint Petersburg, with an Omsk edition (until 2012) and a permanent Moscow edition from September 2008. A federal program of city editions followed; a year after launch total circulation reached 153,000 copies. The Moscow edition closed in 2010. By 2020 the magazine was published in nineteen cities, including Yekaterinburg, Samara, Novosibirsk, Rostov-on-Don, Krasnoyarsk and Nizhny Novgorod; by 2022 the group had shrunk to 14 editions with a combined circulation of 135,000. Sobaka.ru is known for its traditional sections such as «Город» (City), «Портреты» (Portraits), «Аперитив» (Aperitif), «Главное» (Main), «Стиль» (Style), «Образ жизни» (Lifestyle) and «Светская хроника» (Society chronicle). It also runs the annual «Собака.ru ТОП 50» award (since 2006), the «Новые имена в дизайне» competition (since 2007) and the «Лучшие дизайнеры и интерьеры» interior design award (since 2006). In 2004 publisher V. Belotserkovskaya received the national «Медиа-Менеджер России» award. In March 2022 a criminal case was opened against Belotserkovskaya under the "fake news" law.

History

Sobaka.ru was initiated by artist Anatoly Belkin, who brought in Veronika Belotserkovskaya (Antonysheva), then owner of an agency selling television airtime and an exclusive regional seller for the ORT channel, which sponsored the first issues. According to journalist I. Shnurenko, the idea for the magazine appeared as early as 1998 and belonged to him and journalist Mikhail Borisov, while the name was coined by poet Arkady Dragomoshchenko. Belkin became editor and Belotserkovskaya publisher; in 2000 she founded the publishing house «Собака». Belkin described the founding principles: no words about politics, no words about crime, no words about economics, with an emphasis on private life. After several issues produced "for friends" and resembling an art publication, the goal became to make the magazine commercial, and its format and design became more conventional. Around 2005, creative director A. Savelyev said the magazine reflected an attempt to find a compromise between what one wants to write and what actually sells. Around that time Belkin left due to lack of time and incompatibility with the new concept, and Yana Miloradovskaya became editor-in-chief. In 2006 the magazine's website launched. In 2008 the publication expanded beyond Saint Petersburg: in March the publishing house «Собака» together with GI «Prospekt-Omsk» began publishing «Омск. Собака.ru. Журнал о людях в Омске» (ceased in 2012), and from September «Мск. Собака.ру. Журнал о людях в Москве» appeared regularly (editor-in-chief A. Savelyev), with a federal program of editions in large Russian cities. A year after the program launched, total circulation reached 153,000 copies. The Moscow edition closed in 2010. By 2020 the number of cities reached nineteen, including Yekaterinburg, Samara, Novosibirsk, Rostov-on-Don, Krasnoyarsk and Nizhny Novgorod. By 2022 the number of editions and combined circulation had decreased to 14 editions with 135,000 copies. In March 2022 a criminal case was opened against Belotserkovskaya under the "fake news" law; she was among the first against whom the new law was applied. The magazine has traditional sections, some from its founding and others added later. «Город» examines a new current topic each time. «Портреты» includes four interviews with well-known people of Saint Petersburg, including politicians, businesspeople, writers, artists, actors and athletes. «Аперитив» features professional critics and participants discussing new films, music, fashion and design, theaters, museums and restaurants. «Главное», «Стиль», «Образ жизни» and «Светская хроника» cover city and society news. Since 2006 the magazine has annually awarded the «Собака.ru ТОП 50» prize in ten categories: Theater, Art, Literature, Cinema, Music, Business, Science, Sport, Fashion and Startup of the Year. Winners are chosen by open online voting, and a ceremony has been held at venues including the Mikhailovsky Theatre and the Summer Garden. Since 2007 the «Новые имена в дизайне» competition annually selects 10 of the most promising designers of Saint Petersburg; finalists present collections at fashion week, and the online-voting winner may receive an internship with leading Russian designers or a grant to study at international fashion institutes. Finalists have included Alexey Sorokin, Sergey Bondarev, Natalya Leskova, and sisters Katya and Vera Vaiper. Since 2006 the «Лучшие дизайнеры и интерьеры» award has recognized the best interior designers and interiors of Saint Petersburg; in 2013 the main nomination was split into «Лучший интерьер» and «Лучший дизайнер». In 2004 publisher V. Belotserkovskaya became a laureate of the national «Медиа-Менеджер России» award, including for leading the magazine «СПб Собака. Ру» to unconditional leadership in the Saint Petersburg lifestyle magazine market. Photographs and photographers of the magazine have won various competitions.
