Overview
Sonat-Verlag is a German music publishing house that emerged from the Berliner Chormusik-Verlag, founded in Berlin in 2000 by the conductor and editor Stefan Rauh. Originally dedicated exclusively to choral music, the publisher expanded its catalogue in 2009 by taking on the editions of Edition Musica Rinata, adding organ and instrumental works. In January 2015 the two publishing strands were united under the name Sonat-Verlag. Since 1 July 2018 Sonat-Verlag has been part of the Berlin music publisher Ries & Erler, where Stefan Rauh led the choral and church music departments until 2021. The publishing programme is aimed primarily at choir directors and organists, offering versatile literature for liturgical celebrations, concerts and teaching. Its catalogue spans sacred and secular choral music, chamber music, solo vocal music and organ music from the Baroque to the modern era, with an ecumenical orientation. The editorial corpus currently comprises around 3,000 titles, including numerous first editions and revised new prints, with collaboration with contemporary composers and arrangers forming a key focus. Notable series include collections of organ literature, 'Gemeindelied im Chor' (congregational song in choir), the 'Lichterfelder Chorblatt', choral works of the Sing-Akademie edited by Kai-Uwe Jirka and Christian Filips, and works for the Königlicher Hof- und Domchor (today's Staats- und Domchor Berlin). The publisher is based in Kleinmachnow in the Potsdam district of Brandenburg, having moved there in 2013. Stefan Rauh, born in 1963 in Bayreuth and a former member of the Regensburger Domchor, died on 8 June 2023 after a long illness.
History
The publishing house was founded in Berlin in 2000 as the Berliner Chormusik-Verlag by Stefan Rauh, a conductor and editor. As the name indicates, it originally specialised exclusively in choral music. In 2009 the programme was expanded to include the editions of Edition Musica Rinata, so that works for organ and other instruments also became part of the catalogue. The programmes of both publishers, now under one roof, were further developed. In 2013 the publisher moved to Kleinmachnow in the Potsdam district. In January 2015 the two publishing parts were united under the name Sonat-Verlag. On 1 July 2018 Sonat-Verlag became part of the Berlin music publisher Ries & Erler, where Stefan Rauh led the choral and church music departments until 2021. The editorial corpus currently comprises around 3,000 titles, including numerous first editions and revised new musical prints, with collaboration with contemporary composers and arrangers forming a key focus of the ecumenically oriented offering. The publisher's target audience is primarily choir directors and organists, to whom it offers versatile literature for liturgical celebrations, concerts and teaching. The programme covers sacred and secular choral music, chamber music, solo vocal music and organ music from the Baroque to the modern era. Notable series include collections of organ literature on various thematic focuses, 'Gemeindelied im Chor' (choral settings that alternate with or accompany congregational singing), the 'Lichterfelder Chorblatt' (a collection of smaller choral settings of common folk and church songs), choral works of the Sing-Akademie (composed by leaders of the Sing-Akademie or musicians close to it, edited by Kai-Uwe Jirka and Christian Filips), and works for the Königlicher Hof- und Domchor (works composed directly for the Royal Court and Cathedral Choir in Berlin, today's Staats- und Domchor Berlin, or created in its immediate circle). Stefan Rauh, born in 1963 in Bayreuth, attended the music gymnasium of the Regensburger Domspatzen and was a member of the Regensburger Domchor during his school years. He studied Latin, philosophy and church music with Norbert Düchtel, Eberhard Kraus, Georg Ratzinger and Roland Büchner, and returned to the Regensburger Domchor as a choir director. He supplemented his musical training with a postgraduate course in choral conducting with Uwe Gronostay at the Universität der Künste. He died on 8 June 2023 after a long serious illness.
