History
The official website describes the Ginza Sony Park project, which began in 2016 as a project to rebuild the Sony Building, a structure that had stood in Ginza for over 50 years under the concept of a facility open to the city. The Sony Building was created in 1966 by Akio Morita, one of Sony's founders, and included a 10-tsubo public space that Morita called "Ginza's garden." The project adopted a two-stage process: the first stage turned the building during demolition (August 2018 to September 2021) into a park, which received approximately 8.54 million visitors over about three years including the COVID-19 period. The second stage resumed demolition and new construction, with the final form "Ginza Sony Park" completed on August 15, 2024, and grand-opened on January 26, 2025.
