Overview

Soziale Probleme is a German-language academic journal devoted to social-science research on the construction, causes, development, effects and functions of social problems and social control. It has appeared twice yearly since 1990, published on behalf of the board of the 'Sektion Soziale Probleme und soziale Kontrolle' (Section on Social Problems and Social Control) of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Soziologie (German Sociological Association). The journal serves as a discussion forum for work in the tradition of critical criminology and social-science addiction research, among other fields. Its publishing history reflects the changing landscape of German academic publishing. From its founding until 2014 it was published by Centaurus Verlag. From 2015 it appeared under the Springer VS imprint, and since 2023 it has been published by Beltz. Editorial responsibility has rested with a twelve-member editorial board since volume 22 (2011). All articles from the first 21 volumes are freely accessible, according to information available as of 2015. The journal is a specialist title rather than a mass-market product, aimed at sociologists, criminologists and social scientists working on deviance, social control and related policy questions. Its bilingual relevance is limited: it is a German-language publication with no separate English edition, and its brand identity is tied to its scholarly community and its successive publishing houses rather than to commercial consumer marketing.

History

Soziale Probleme was founded in 1990 and has been published twice yearly since then on behalf of the board of the 'Sektion Soziale Probleme und soziale Kontrolle' of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Soziologie. The journal was conceived as a discussion forum for social-science research into the construction, causes, development, effects and functions of social problems and social control, and it has carried contributions from the fields of critical criminology and social-science addiction research. For its first decades the journal was published by Centaurus Verlag, which handled it until 2014. From 2015 the title moved to Springer VS, the social-science imprint of the Springer publishing group. Since 2023 it has been published by Beltz. Editorial responsibility has been exercised by a twelve-member editorial board since volume 22 in 2011. As of 2015, all articles from the first 21 volumes were freely available, giving the journal a partly open-access character for its back catalogue.
