Overview
SpaceX, formally Space Exploration Technologies Corp., is a privately held American aerospace company founded by Elon Musk in 2002. It designs, manufactures, launches, and operates space transportation systems and satellite communications infrastructure. The company was created around the objective of reducing the cost of access to space, increasing launch reliability, and eventually supporting human settlement beyond Earth, particularly on Mars. SpaceX initially pursued this mission through the small Falcon 1 rocket. After three launch failures between 2006 and 2008 brought the company close to collapse, Falcon 1 reached orbit on its fourth attempt in September 2008. That achievement made SpaceX the first privately developed company to launch a liquid-propellant rocket into orbit. NASA subsequently awarded the company a major Commercial Resupply Services contract, providing the financial foundation for development of the larger Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon spacecraft. Falcon 9 became the company’s core launch vehicle. It has carried commercial satellites, cargo spacecraft, crewed missions, and government payloads from launch sites in Florida and California. SpaceX’s most consequential technical achievement has been the development of a reusable orbital-class first stage. Falcon 9 first landed successfully in December 2015 and later demonstrated repeated recovery and reflight. Reusability, vertical integration, high launch cadence, and standardized vehicle production helped reduce prices and altered competition in the commercial and national-security launch markets. The company expanded its human-spaceflight activities through Dragon 2. In 2020, the Crew Dragon Demo-2 mission carried NASA astronauts to the International Space Station, returning crewed orbital launch capability to the United States from American soil. Crew Dragon has since supported NASA missions and private astronaut flights. SpaceX also operates the more powerful Falcon Heavy, which uses three Falcon 9-derived first-stage cores and entered service in 2018. SpaceX’s other major business is Starlink, a broadband network delivered through a large low-Earth-orbit satellite constellation. Starlink serves residential, enterprise, maritime, aviation, and government customers in multiple markets and has become a major source of company activity and revenue. A related government-focused service, Starshield, adapts satellite communications and other space capabilities for national-security users. The company is also developing Starship, a fully reusable launch system composed of a large spacecraft and a Super Heavy booster. Starship is intended for heavy-lift orbital missions, satellite deployment, lunar operations, and eventually human missions to Mars. Its development has involved repeated flight tests, partial successes, vehicle losses, and continuing regulatory and engineering work. SpaceX’s principal customers and institutional partners include NASA, the United States Space Force, the National Reconnaissance Office, commercial satellite operators, and private organizations. The business is vertically integrated, producing many rocket engines, structures, avionics, software systems, and spacecraft components internally. Elon Musk remains the controlling shareholder and voting controller, while Gwynne Shotwell has led day-to-day corporate operations as president and chief operating officer. SpaceX remains private and does not have a public stock ticker.
History
Elon Musk began exploring Mars-related projects in the early 2000s and concluded that existing launch prices were too high for ambitious space development. After unsuccessful efforts to purchase a refurbished Russian launch vehicle, he decided to establish a company capable of building rockets internally. Space Exploration Technologies was founded in 2002, initially operating from Southern California and recruiting engineers from established aerospace companies. The first vehicle, Falcon 1, was designed as a relatively small, expendable, two-stage orbital rocket. SpaceX emphasized vertical integration and the use of commercially available components where practical. The first three Falcon 1 launches, conducted between 2006 and 2008, failed. The company’s finances became precarious, but the fourth launch, on September 28, 2008, successfully reached orbit. A fifth launch succeeded in July 2009, after which SpaceX retired Falcon 1 and concentrated resources on Falcon 9. NASA’s Commercial Orbital Transportation Services program was a decisive turning point. SpaceX received development support for Falcon 9 and Dragon, followed by a Commercial Resupply Services award to deliver cargo to the ISS. Falcon 9 first flew in 2010, and Dragon completed a successful demonstration mission later that year. In May 2012, Dragon became the first privately operated spacecraft to deliver cargo to and return cargo from the ISS. During the 2010s, SpaceX developed a recovery system for Falcon 9’s first stage. The program used controlled atmospheric reentry, deployable landing legs, grid fins, and autonomous landing systems. The first successful landing occurred in December 2015, followed by the first landing on an autonomous drone ship in April 2016. In March 2017, a previously flown booster launched the SES-10 satellite and landed again. These achievements made rocket reuse a routine commercial objective rather than solely an experimental concept. SpaceX experienced significant setbacks during this period. The CRS-7 mission failed in June 2015 because of a hardware failure involving a helium pressure vessel support strut. In September 2016, a Falcon 9 exploded during preparations for a static-fire test, destroying the AMOS-6 satellite and interrupting launches for several months. Investigations led to design, inspection, and operational changes. Falcon Heavy made its first flight in February 2018. Its architecture combined three Falcon 9-derived cores and provided substantially greater lift capability than Falcon 9. Meanwhile, NASA selected SpaceX to develop a crewed Dragon variant. Crew Dragon’s uncrewed demonstrations preceded the successful Demo-2 mission in May 2020, when NASA astronauts launched from Florida and traveled to the ISS. SpaceX also diversified into satellite connectivity. Starlink development was publicly announced in 2015, and operational satellites began launching in 2019. The constellation expanded through frequent Falcon 9 missions and created a direct-to-customer broadband business serving locations with limited terrestrial infrastructure. Starlink’s government-oriented counterpart is known as Starshield. The company’s current strategic centerpiece is Starship, a large fully reusable launch system consisting of the Super Heavy booster and Starship spacecraft. SpaceX conducts development and flight testing from its Starbase facilities in Texas, subject to regulatory approval. The system is intended for large-scale satellite deployment, lunar missions, and eventually interplanetary transportation. SpaceX remains privately held, with Musk retaining effective voting control. Its business combines launch services, human spaceflight, spacecraft production, and satellite communications.
