Overview
Stadsfeestzaal (City Festival Hall) is a landmark building and shopping centre on the Meir, one of the main shopping streets of Antwerp, Belgium. Designed by architect Alexis van Mechelen and completed in 1908, the neoclassical hall originally hosted art exhibitions, antique and book fairs, the auto salon and many other events. A second entrance connects the building to Hopland. In 2000 a fire destroyed almost the entire building. It was subsequently renovated and converted into a luxury shopping centre, reopening on 25 October 2007. The redevelopment aimed to strengthen Antwerp's position as a shopping destination. Notable features include a champagne bar and the world's first Tommy Hilfiger Tailor Made shop. Today the Stadsfeestzaal is home to a mix of international and local retailers, cafés and restaurants under its famous golden dome, and welcomes around 6.5 million visitors per year. The official website lists stores such as Action, Amazing Oriental, Delhaize, Délifrance, Flying Tiger Copenhagen, Hans Anders, Kruidvat, L'Occitane en Provence, Nationale Loterij, Optical Center, Pal Zileri, Snipes, Søstrene Grene, Urban Outfitters, Weekday and Wibra, alongside food and beverage outlets including Antoon Van Dyck, Dampshop, Lloyd Coffee Eatery, Lucky Sushi, Momade cupcakes, Qurtinz, Zest Fresh Juice and others. The centre also offers services such as security staff and ONE HUNDRED restrooms. The building has a long association with sport: it hosted the three-cushion billiards world championship in 1953 and 1974, both times sold out with 3,000 spectators per session; after its conversion, the 2013 championship moved to the Lotto Arena. The Stadsfeestzaal remains a key retail and architectural landmark in Antwerp.
History
The Stadsfeestzaal was designed by architect Alexis van Mechelen and built in 1908 in a neoclassical style. It is located on the Meir, one of Antwerp's most important shopping streets, with a second entrance from Hopland. For much of the 20th century the hall served as a multi-purpose venue, hosting art exhibitions, the antique fair, the book fair, the auto salon and many other events. In 1953 it was chosen for the first time as the venue for the three-cushion billiards world championship; it was sold out on all match days with 3,000 spectators. The world championship returned in 1974. In 2000 a fire destroyed almost the entire building. The Stadsfeestzaal was subsequently renovated and converted into a luxury shopping centre, which opened on 25 October 2007. The aim of the redevelopment was to position Antwerp even more strongly as a shopping metropolis. Special features include a champagne bar and the world's first Tommy Hilfiger Tailor Made shop. Because of the change of use after the 2007 reopening, the 2013 world championship was held at the Lotto Arena instead. Today the centre houses numerous shops, cafés and restaurants under its golden dome and attracts around 6.5 million visitors per year.
