Overview

Stadtbus Steyr is the urban bus system serving the city of Steyr in Upper Austria. It is operated by Stadtbetriebe Steyr GmbH (SBS), a municipal utility company wholly owned by the City of Steyr. SBS is the successor to Stadtwerke Steyr, which was founded in the 1960s; the current company was established in December 2010 and began operations on 1 January 2012. The bus network is one of several public services provided by SBS, alongside gas, water, waste management, funeral services, the city indoor pool, and the artificial ice rink. The Stadtbus network comprises 18 lines that connect Steyr's districts and all lead to the main railway station. The total route length is 87 km, and the network density is 2.9 km per km². The buses carry approximately 13,700 passengers per day, with an average speed of 17 km/h in city traffic. The fleet consists exclusively of MAN buses, as MAN operates a production facility in Steyr. In May 2025, the first electric bus, a Mercedes-Benz model, entered regular service. The bus garage is located at the headquarters of Stadtbetriebe Steyr at Ennser Straße 10. Stadtbus Steyr provides an essential public transport link for residents and visitors, complementing regional bus services. The network includes daytime lines, evening lines (20 and 21), and special variants such as line 2a and 2b serving the hospital. The service is integrated into the Upper Austrian transport association (OÖ Verkehrsverbund).

History

The Stadtbus Steyr network is operated by Stadtbetriebe Steyr GmbH (SBS), which is the successor to Stadtwerke Steyr, founded in the 1960s. SBS was established in December 2010 and began operational service on 1 January 2012. It is wholly owned by the City of Steyr and is responsible for gas, water, transport, funeral services, crematorium, city indoor pool, artificial ice rink, and waste management. The bus network has evolved over time. In 2016, line 11 to Garsten was discontinued, and since then regional buses from Stern&Hafferl have operated on line 443 from Dambach to Steyr at shorter intervals. As of the early 2020s, the network consists of 18 lines with a total length of 87 km, all leading to Steyr railway station. The fleet has been exclusively MAN buses, reflecting the presence of a MAN production facility in Steyr. In May 2025, the first electric bus, a Mercedes-Benz model, was introduced on the network.
