Overview
Standardkessel is a German engineering brand whose roots go back to 1925, when engineer August Fasel founded the company in Duisburg to build small boiler units. Over the following decades it grew into a specialist in high- and low-pressure steam boilers, steel heating boilers and complete boiler plants for industry and district heating. In 1951 it built the Condor, described as the first fully automatic oil-fired large water-space boiler, and in 1953 it extended its programme to water-tube boilers. A first fluidised-bed plant followed in 1982. Ownership changed several times: Lentjes took 50% in 1985 and 100% in 1997, production in Duisburg closed in 1999 amid a crisis in German power-plant engineering, and in 2004 the businesses LLS Standardkessel Service, Standardkessel-Fasel Utrecht, Standardkessel and Baumgarte were acquired by the Dutch financial investor HTP Investments B.V. In 2007 management bought the group back with the support of a private Belgian partner. A parallel tradition belongs to Baumgarte: in 1935 August Baumgarte founded Eisenwerk Baumgarte GmbH in Brackwede, building apparatus and steam boilers, and in 1962 realised its first waste boiler for the Frankfurt am Main waste incineration plant, becoming a leading supplier of waste-to-energy boilers in Germany and Switzerland. Lentjes acquired a majority of Baumgarte's boiler division in 1979, and after Lentjes was fully taken over by Metallgesellschaft in 1990 Baumgarte focused increasingly on waste incineration boilers; boiler manufacturing in Bielefeld closed in 1997 and the company concentrated on engineering. In 2004 Baumgarte was acquired by HTP Investments together with Standardkessel GmbH. Today the group operates under the umbrella of Standardkessel Baumgarte Holding GmbH, headquartered in Mülheim an der Ruhr. Since December 2014 the holding has been a subsidiary of the Japanese JFE Engineering Corporation, part of JFE Holdings. The holding has two operating subsidiaries, Standardkessel Baumgarte GmbH and Standardkessel Baumgarte Service GmbH. Standardkessel Baumgarte GmbH is divided into three business areas: Power Plants (Mülheim an der Ruhr), Energy from Waste (Bielefeld) and Catalytics (Hamburg). The company supplies turnkey power plants and power-plant components for industrial and municipal energy supply, converting fossil fuels such as coal, gas and oil as well as alternative fuels including biomass, biogenic residues, household waste, refuse-derived fuels and industrial residues into heat and electricity in an environmentally sound way. It has delivered and commissioned numerous boiler and power plants across Europe. In May 2017 the two traditional companies Standardkessel GmbH and Baumgarte Boiler Systems GmbH merged into Standardkessel Baumgarte GmbH, and in August 2021 Standardkessel Baumgarte GmbH moved its site from Duisburg to Mülheim an der Ruhr.
History
The Standardkessel brand began in 1925 when engineer August Fasel founded the company in Duisburg, initially producing only small boiler units in Duisburg-Wanheimerort. In the 1930s Standardkessel manufactured and supplied large water-space boilers, concentrating mainly on the production and sale of high-pressure and low-pressure steam boilers and steel heating boilers. In 1936 August Fasel transferred management to his sons, and the name Standard-Kessel-Gesellschaft, Gebrüder Fasel emerged. In 1945 the company stopped building steel heating boilers and focused exclusively on the planning and construction of complete boiler plants for industry and district heating. In 1951 it built the Condor large water-space boiler, described as the first fully automatic oil-fired boiler, and in 1953 it extended its delivery programme to water-tube boiler plants. In 1980 the company moved its registered office to Meiderich, and in 1982 it commissioned its first fluidised-bed-fired plant. Standardkessel was acquired 50% by Lentjes in 1985 and 100% in 1997. Because of the crisis in German power-plant engineering, production at the Duisburg site was closed in 1999. In 2001 Standardkessel concentrated its delivery and service programme on water-tube boilers and complete plants. In 2004 the companies LLS Standardkessel Service, Standardkessel-Fasel Utrecht, Standardkessel and Baumgarte were acquired by the Dutch financial investor HTP Investments B.V. On 21 May 2007 the Standardkessel Baumgarte management acquired the group with the support of a private Belgian partner. In 2008 emc Germany GmbH was acquired and Standardkessel Baumgarte Service GmbH was founded. In 2010 the Environment & Power Company Ltd. was founded in Saudi Arabia. In August 2021 Standardkessel Baumgarte GmbH changed location, moving from Duisburg to Mülheim an der Ruhr. A second root lies with Baumgarte. In February 1935 August Baumgarte founded Eisenwerk Baumgarte GmbH in Brackwede. The following years were marked by the systematic build-up of design, manufacturing and assembly of apparatus and steam boilers such as flame-tube boilers, Emma coke boilers, large water-space boilers, water-tube boilers and mechanical grate stokers for coal firing. As one of the first in the industry, Baumgarte introduced electric welding of all boiler pressure parts in 1950. With modern testing equipment and methods such as X-ray, strength testing and chemical laboratory analyses, Baumgarte was regarded as a quality leader. In 1962 Baumgarte realised its first waste boiler for the waste incineration plant in Frankfurt am Main. In the following years Baumgarte developed into the leading manufacturer and supplier of waste incineration boilers in Germany and Switzerland, and this competence was continuously expanded. At the end of the 1960s Baumgarte earned a reputation as a pioneer in the construction of tail-end boilers. In 1979 Ferdinand Lentjes GmbH acquired a majority of the boiler construction operating division. Through the 100% takeover of Lentjes AG by Metallgesellschaft/Frankfurt am Main in 1990, Baumgarte's main activities shifted increasingly to the construction of boilers for waste incineration plants. With the closure of boiler manufacturing in Bielefeld in 1997, Baumgarte concentrated on engineering services. The company was acquired in 2004 by the Dutch financial investor HTP Investments B.V., together with Standardkessel GmbH. In business, Standardkessel Baumgarte supplies turnkey power plants and power-plant components for industrial and municipal energy supply. Besides fossil energy sources such as coal, gas and oil, alternative energy sources such as biomass, biogenic residues, household waste, refuse-derived fuels and residues from industrial production processes are used and converted in an environmentally sound way into heat and electricity. Standardkessel Baumgarte has already delivered and commissioned a large number of boiler plants and power plants in Europe. Since December 2014 the Standardkessel-Baumgarte Group has belonged to the Japanese JFE Engineering Corporation. As the Engineering Division of the JFE Group, JFE Engineering Corporation is one of the market leaders for grate firing and waste gasification systems and has its focus on the Japanese market with more than 350 installed firing systems. Whereas the scope of supply in the early years consisted of boilers and apparatus, Standardkessel Baumgarte today supplies not only complete system solutions (boiler, firing system, flue gas cleaning, water-steam cycle and turbines) but also turnkey power plants as general contractor (EPC). In May 2017 the two traditional companies Standardkessel GmbH and Baumgarte Boiler Systems GmbH merged into Standardkessel Baumgarte GmbH. The product portfolio remained unchanged.
