Overview

Starr Indemnity & Liability Company is a U.S. specialty property-casualty insurance company and one of the principal underwriting subsidiaries of Starr Insurance Companies, the global insurance and investment organization built around the legacy of Cornelius Vander Starr. The carrier is best known as a writer of excess and surplus lines (E&S) business — coverage for risks that standard admitted insurers decline or cannot place — with particular strength in specialty casualty, excess liability, professional and management liability, and related commercial lines. It operates alongside Starr's other U.S. and international insurance companies, which together offer property, casualty, accident and health, aviation, marine, energy, and financial lines coverage in markets around the world. Starr Indemnity's role within the group is that of a licensed U.S. carrier that provides the paper and capacity for specialty and excess risks placed through wholesale brokers and select retail intermediaries. Its business is concentrated in the United States, but it benefits from the group's international licensing network and reinsurance relationships. The company is part of a privately held insurance group rather than a listed public company; Starr Insurance Companies is associated with C.V. Starr & Co., Inc. and its affiliated entities, and the group's leadership has long been linked to the Starr name and to Maurice R. Greenberg's era at AIG and later at Starr. For brokers and risk managers, Starr Indemnity is positioned as a specialty carrier with underwriting authority and a focus on complex or non-standard risks rather than mass-market personal lines. Its brand identity is closely tied to the parent Starr name, which carries a long history in global insurance dating back to the early twentieth century. The company does not run consumer-facing advertising campaigns; its market presence is built through wholesale distribution, underwriting relationships, and the broader Starr group's reputation for specialty expertise and international reach.

History

Starr Indemnity & Liability Company belongs to the Starr Insurance Companies group, whose roots trace to the insurance business founded by Cornelius Vander Starr in Shanghai in 1919. That enterprise grew into a global network of insurance companies and agencies, and after the Second World War expanded into the United States and other markets. The Starr name became closely associated with American International Group (AIG), which C.V. Starr founded and which was later led by Maurice R. Greenberg. Following Greenberg's departure from AIG in 2005, the Starr group — organized around C.V. Starr & Co., Inc. and Starr International Company — re-emerged as an active insurance and investment organization, acquiring and forming carriers to write specialty business worldwide. Starr Indemnity & Liability Company was established as one of the group's U.S. insurance company platforms, providing admitted and surplus lines capacity for specialty commercial risks. Over time it became a core underwriting vehicle for Starr's U.S. excess and surplus lines operations, complementing the group's other carriers and its international network. The company's growth has tracked the broader expansion of the Starr group, which today operates in dozens of countries and writes a wide range of property, casualty, accident and health, aviation, marine, and energy business. Because Starr Indemnity is a subsidiary within a privately held group, detailed public financial reporting is limited; its results are consolidated within Starr Insurance Companies. The carrier's history is therefore best understood as part of the Starr group's broader story: a specialty insurance organization built on underwriting discipline, wholesale distribution relationships, and international licensing, rather than a standalone consumer brand.
