Overview
Stavropol stud (Russian: Ставропольский конный завод №170) is a Russian national stud farm, or haras, located in Novokavkazsky in the Alexandrovskoye District of Stavropol Krai. Despite its name, it is not situated in the city of Stavropol itself but about 140 km from it and roughly 40 km from Mineralnye Vody, according to the farm's own website. It is officially designated stud farm No. 170. The farm is known for breeding two pure breeds: the Akhal-Teke and the English Thoroughbred. It played a historical role in the selection of the Tersk breed, for which it and the Tersk stud were awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labour by a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet on 14 June 1949. Tersk horse breeding at Stavropol later declined; in the 1980s the farm held around 250 Tersk mares, and after perestroika that breeding was relocated to a former kolkhoz at Sablia, about twenty kilometres away. Akhal-Teke horses were integrated into the Stavropol stud in 1984. Since then the farm has become one of the world's leading breeders of the breed, maintaining a broodmare band of about sixty purebred Akhal-Teke mares, including 18 breed champions and a similar number of winners of traditional race prizes. Its English Thoroughbred division began to be formed in the early 1990s on the basis of the best domestic and high-quality imported stock, and has produced a number of notable winners of traditional prizes and all-Russian record holders. In December 1991, Jean-Louis Gouraud invited the farm's then director, zootechnician Alexandre Klimuk, to an international meeting on the Akhal-Teke horse at the Salon du cheval de Paris. Klimuk was still at the head of the stud in 2014 and authored the book Golden Horse: The Legendary Akhal-Teke. In February 2016, Vladimir Putin presented an Akhal-Teke stallion named Hadžibek, born at the Stavropol stud in April 2012 and world champion of his breed in 2014 and 2015, as a gift to the King of Bahrain, Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. According to 2011 data, the farm's agricultural land area was 39 km² and it employed 98 people. Its official website lists sections for the farm, horses for sale, events, gallery, journalism and contacts, and offers content in Russian and English. The director is Aleksey Aleksandrovich Paravaev and the head groom (nachkon) is Aleksandr Stepanovich Klimuk.
History
The Stavropol stud, officially stud farm No. 170, is a Russian national haras located in Novokavkazsky in the Alexandrovskoye District of Stavropol Krai. Although its name suggests the city of Stavropol, the farm lies about 140 km from Stavropol and roughly 40 km from Mineralnye Vody, according to its own website. The farm is historically associated with the Tersk breed. By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet on 14 June 1949, the Tersk and Stavropol studs were awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labour in recognition of their work in selecting Tersk horses. Tersk breeding at Stavropol later declined; in the 1980s the farm held around 250 Tersk mares, and after perestroika this breeding was relocated to a former kolkhoz at Sablia, about twenty kilometres away and difficult to access. In 1984 the Stavropol stud integrated Akhal-Teke horses. The breed found a new home there, and over more than a quarter-century the Stavropol Akhal-Tekes have had and continue to have a major influence on the breed both in Russia and worldwide. The farm now maintains a broodmare band of about sixty purebred Akhal-Teke mares, including 18 breed champions and a similar number of winners of traditional race prizes. Its breeding stallions are highly rated for both type and performance, and its horses win exhibitions, races and other competitions annually. The English Thoroughbred division began to be formed in the early 1990s, using the best domestic and high-quality imported material. Over the years the farm has raised a number of outstanding English Thoroughbreds, winners of many traditional prizes and all-Russian record holders. In December 1991, Jean-Louis Gouraud invited the farm's then director, zootechnician Alexandre Klimuk, to an international meeting on the Akhal-Teke horse at the Salon du cheval de Paris. Klimuk was still at the head of the stud in 2014 and authored the book Golden Horse: The Legendary Akhal-Teke (2014). In February 2016, Vladimir Putin gave an Akhal-Teke stallion named Hadžibek, born at the Stavropol stud in April 2012 and world champion of his breed in 2014 and 2015, as a gift to the King of Bahrain, Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. According to 2011 data, the farm's agricultural land area was 39 km² and it employed 98 people. Traditionally, sales of Stavropol stud horses take place the day after those of the Tersk stud, to make it easier for potential buyers to travel from one sale to the other. The farm's official website provides sections for the farm, horses for sale, events, gallery, journalism and contacts, in Russian and English. The director is Aleksey Aleksandrovich Paravaev and the head groom (nachkon) is Aleksandr Stepanovich Klimuk.
