Overview

Steil Gruppe is a German family-run corporate group whose core business is the recycling of metallic waste, carried out by Theo Steil GmbH Schrott- und Metallgroßhandel, headquartered in Trier. The group also includes Steil Entsorgung GmbH (disposal services, Trier) and Gotra GmbH (transport and logistics, Luxembourg). It traces its origins to 1924, when Theo Steil founded a scrap trading business in the Paulinstraße. The group operates across Germany and neighbouring European countries, with Theo Steil GmbH having 23 additional branches in Germany and abroad.

History

In 1924, Theo Steil founded a scrap trading business in the Paulinstraße, laying the foundation for the recycling of scrap, metals, textiles, and paper waste. In 1964, Heinrich Gondert took over the company, which then had eight employees. In 1966/67, his sons Klaus and Johannes Gondert joined the company and it moved to a larger site in the Metternichstraße. In 1970/71, a 500-tonne large shear was commissioned and the hall was expanded with a large paper press. In 1974, the company Theo Steil celebrated its 50th anniversary. In 1978, it moved to its current site in the Trier harbour. In 1986, the first branch was established in Cologne. In 1989, the company areas were separated into Theo Steil GmbH (scrap and metal wholesale and container service) and Containerdienst Steil GmbH (waste paper and container service). In 1991, the forwarding company Gotra GmbH was founded in Luxembourg. In 1995, the hazardous waste company Theo Steil Kreislaufwirtschaft (SKW) was founded. In 2003, the Trier site of Theo Steil GmbH was expanded with a kondirator plant. In 2008, Johannes Gondert became sole shareholder. In 2009, Containerdienst Steil and SKW became Steil Entsorgung GmbH. In 2011, an export branch of Theo Steil GmbH was founded in Dordrecht (NL). In 2013, Stephan Gondert took over the company in the third generation; the group's total tonnage exceeded 1.8 million tonnes and it employed 780 people at 13 locations. In 2014, the Steil Gruppe celebrated its 90th anniversary. In 2019, SEOS in Bitburg was taken over by STEIL ENTSORGUNG. In 2021, Hans Enders GmbH Altrich was taken over and integrated into STEIL ENTSORGUNG. In 2022, Lausitzer Container & Metall GmbH, Großräschen, was acquired. In 2023, shares were acquired (text truncated).
