Overview

STILL is a German manufacturer of forklift trucks and warehouse equipment, headquartered in Hamburg. Founded in 1920 by Hans Still as a repair shop for electric motors, the company evolved into a full-service provider of intralogistics solutions. It is part of the KION Group, Europe's largest manufacturer of forklift trucks and warehouse equipment by unit volume. STILL employs around 6,900 people and operates through a network of 14 sales offices and 780 service centres in Germany, plus 20 subsidiaries and 179 dealers internationally, with over 1,500 service centres worldwide. The company's product range includes electric forklifts, internal combustion forklifts, warehouse technology, automated guided vehicles, racking systems, fleet management software, and a broad portfolio of services. STILL is known for innovations such as lateral battery change and hybrid drive systems. Its main production sites are in Hamburg and Reutlingen (Germany), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Châtellerault (France), and Luzzara (Italy).

History

STILL was founded in 1920 by Hans Still in Hamburg as a company for the repair of electric motors. The company quickly expanded into manufacturing its own products, including generators and generating sets. In 1949, STILL produced its first forklift truck, which led to a major customer, the Deutsche Bundesbahn (West German Federal Railway). In 1968, STILL joined Esslingen Maschinenfabrik; in 1973, the company was taken over by Linde AG. In 1989, STILL acquired the French company Saxby in Montataire, followed by the German company Wagner in Reutlingen in 1997. In 2001, STILL acquired a local manufacturer in Rio de Janeiro, and in 2004, the Swedish company Stocka. In September 2006, STILL, together with Linde Material Handling and the Italian company Officine Meccaniche, spun off from Linde AG to create the KION Group consortium, which was then sold to a financial consortium consisting of KKR and Goldman Sachs. The KION Group, created through a leveraged buyout, later had to cut 250 jobs in France and 350 in Italy to adapt to market conditions, as competitors such as Jungheinrich and Toyota had warehouse production capacities far exceeding those of KION. Production at Montataire was transferred to Luzzara, and that of Bari to Hamburg. The Montataire plant, at the time of its closure, had a full order book and was largely profitable; it was effectively a stock-market-driven layoff. Today, STILL is part of KION Group, Europe's largest manufacturer of forklift trucks and warehouse equipment by unit volume, with more than 42,000 employees in over 100 countries.
