Overview
Strukton is a Dutch construction company. Its origins trace to 1918, when Nederlandse Spoorwegen undertook to build its own head office, and N.V. Het Spoorwegbouwbedrijf was founded in 1921. The company moved from Schijndel to Maarssen in 1952, merged with the Danish construction company Christiani & Nielsen in 1972, and from this the Strukton Group arose in 1974. Strukton describes its mission as contributing to the safety, quality and sustainability of rail, energy and road infrastructure, and states that it works in five home countries: the Netherlands, Italy, Belgium, Sweden and Denmark. Its official company details list Strukton Groep B.V. at Westkanaaldijk 2, Utrecht, Netherlands.
History
Strukton's history begins in 1918, when Nederlandse Spoorwegen (Dutch Railways), a non-profit venture in which the two largest railway companies in the Netherlands had joined forces, needed a striking new head office. The solution was to do the work itself: producing 22 million bricks by taking over the Molenheide brickworks in Schijndel, opening its own timber yard for 4000 m³ of oak, and purchasing two large motorised barges to transport construction materials along the canals in Utrecht. The resulting building, De Inktpot, was completed in three years and still stands close to Utrecht Central Station with listed building status. After this construction work, N.V. Het Spoorwegbouwbedrijf was founded in 1921. In 1952 the company moved from Schijndel to Maarssen, and in 1972 it merged with the Danish construction company Christiani & Nielsen, from which the Strukton Group arose in 1974, followed by a number of years of strong growth.
