Overview

Suntopia World is a family-oriented amusement park located in Agano, Niigata Prefecture, Japan. It opened in 1976 as Yasuda Island and was rebranded to its current name in 1998 after a major renovation. The park is operated by Yasuda Yuen Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of the Yamashita Furniture Group. It features a mix of classic and thrill rides, including roller coasters, a Ferris wheel, and water attractions. The park is known for its retro atmosphere and has been used as a filming location for TV dramas. It operates seasonally, closing in winter due to snow. In recent years, it has faced financial difficulties but has continued operations through crowdfunding and unique events.

History

Suntopia World opened in 1976 as Yasuda Island in Yasuda Town (now Agano City), Niigata Prefecture. It was established by Yasuda Yuen Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of the Yamashita Furniture Group, at the request of Yasuda Town to promote local revitalization. The park initially targeted families with the catchphrase "Children's Land" and featured rides such as a jet coaster, Ferris wheel, merry-go-round, Astro Fighter, and Chain Tower. In the 1980s, it began adding thrill rides aimed at young people, including "Loop the Loop" in 1981 and "Twin Dragon" in 1986. A "ride-all-you-can" pass was introduced in 1985. In 1993, the water ride "Rock Adventure" was added, and in 1994, "Wild Jet" and "Safari Hunter" were introduced. In April 1998, the park underwent a major renovation costing about 3 billion yen and was renamed Suntopia World, adopting an Italian theme. A garden plaza with an artificial waterfall was created in front of the Ferris wheel, and the center house was expanded. New children's attractions like "Sky Elephant" and "Ice House Alaska" were added. In 2011, the park filed for civil rehabilitation due to debts of about 400 million yen but continued operating. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic forced closures and a significant drop in sales; a crowdfunding campaign raised about 55 million yen, allowing the park to reopen. Since then, it has held unique events such as "Girigiri Projects" with attractions like the "Explosive Merry-Go-Round" and "Meditation Ferris Wheel."
