Overview
Founded in 1833, Svitzer builds on almost 200 years of experience, and its powerful tugboats and towage experts work to keep goods flowing, businesses thriving, and communities connected. Today, Svitzer is a leading global port and terminal infrastructure provider, serving approximately 2,000 customers in 141 ports and 40 terminals across 37 countries through a fleet of 446 vessels. Its services include towage, line handling, personnel transfer, and other marine services.
History
Svitzer was established in 1833 as a pioneering salvage company. In 1842 it bought its first professional diving equipment. In 1860 it salvaged a steamship from the bottom of a Swedish lake and rebuilt it into Svitzer's first steam engine salvage vessel. In 1870 it entered the towage business. From 1914 to 1970 it gained recognition for assisting vessels in distress during wartime. In 1956 it was chosen by the UN to handle the Suez Canal clearance operation. In 1978 it built an 11,000 hp and 110 bp vessel, one of the most powerful anchor handling tugs for offshore work at the time. In 1979 the Maersk Group became majority shareholder. In 1999 it began geographical expansion with the purchase of Swedish towage company Röda Bolaget. In 2001 the acquisition of Wijsmiller's operation added 140 vessels in more than 20 countries. In 2007 the acquisition of Adsteam Marine added 150 tugs plus barges and workboats in Australasia and the UK. In 2012 it launched the ECOtug, setting a revolutionary environmental standard.
