Overview

Swiggy is an Indian consumer-technology company headquartered in Bengaluru. Its principal business connects customers with restaurants through a digital ordering platform and an integrated delivery network. The company has also developed adjacent services, including rapid grocery and household-goods delivery through Instamart, restaurant dining and table reservations through Dineout, and other convenience and local-commerce offerings introduced during different stages of its expansion. The business originated in 2013, when Sriharsha Majety and Nandan Reddy created Bundl, an online-commerce and logistics concept intended to facilitate domestic courier and shipping services. Bundl was discontinued as a standalone direction, and the founders brought in Rahul Jaimini, who had previously worked at Myntra. The three launched Swiggy's food-delivery service in Bengaluru in August 2014. Its model combined restaurant discovery, ordering, payment, and delivery coordination in one application, helping it compete in a fragmented Indian food-service market. Swiggy expanded rapidly beyond Bengaluru. By 2015 it was serving multiple major Indian cities, and by the middle of 2018 it had reached 16 cities. In 2019 the company reported operations in approximately 500 cities, extending its geographic reach while investing in restaurant supply, delivery capacity, and technology. Its restaurant-partner initiatives included Swiggy Access, a network of ready-to-use kitchens intended to help restaurants enter new areas, and The Bowl Company, a company-operated cloud-kitchen brand launched in 2017. The company broadened its proposition beyond prepared food. Swiggy Stores, introduced in 2019, attempted to enable deliveries of general merchandise from local retailers. The service was later closed as the company concentrated resources on Instamart, its quick-commerce operation using dark stores to offer fast delivery of groceries and everyday products. Instamart became an important growth business, although it operates in a highly competitive segment where Blinkit and Zepto have generally held stronger market positions. Swiggy also introduced Swiggy Go for package delivery, subsequently renamed Swiggy Genie, and acquired Dineout in 2022 to strengthen its restaurant-discovery, dining, and reservation ecosystem. The COVID-19 pandemic created both exceptional demand for delivery and substantial operational pressure. Swiggy added alcohol-delivery services in selected Indian states where permitted, while also reducing its workforce and closing many cloud kitchens as restaurant activity contracted. The company continued investing in logistics and quick commerce after the pandemic, but its expansion was accompanied by restructuring, workforce reductions, and portfolio changes. It sold its Swiggy Access kitchen operations to Kitchens@ in 2023 and reduced headcount in 2024 while preparing for a public offering. Swiggy became a public limited company in 2024 and launched its initial public offering in November of that year. It remains primarily an India-focused platform. Its core competitive relationship is with Zomato in food delivery, while Instamart competes with Blinkit, Zepto, and other rapid-commerce services. By 2025, the company described food delivery as operating in more than 700 Indian cities and Instamart as operating in more than 100 cities. Its later initiatives included Scenes, an events and ticketing service, while Swiggy Genie was discontinued in 2025. Swiggy's overall positioning is based on convenience, breadth of selection, delivery reliability, and the integration of food, grocery, dining, and local services within a single consumer platform.

History

Swiggy's origins trace to 2013, when Sriharsha Majety and Nandan Reddy developed Bundl, an e-commerce and logistics concept intended to facilitate courier and shipping services within India. That direction was halted in 2014. The founders then recruited Rahul Jaimini, a former Myntra employee, and redirected the venture toward restaurant ordering and delivery. Swiggy launched in Bengaluru in August 2014, combining restaurant listings, digital ordering, payments, and delivery coordination in a single platform. The company expanded quickly during a period when India's food-delivery market was unsettled. By 2015 it had moved from Bengaluru into eight major Indian cities. Foodpanda, TinyOwl, Ola Cafe, and other competitors faced operational or financial difficulties, while Swiggy invested in delivery density, restaurant onboarding, and customer convenience. Its footprint reached 16 cities by the middle of 2018 and approximately 500 cities in 2019, putting it at a scale comparable with its principal food-delivery rival, Zomato. Swiggy also developed infrastructure and operating models beyond the basic marketplace. In January 2017 it launched The Bowl Company, a cloud-kitchen food brand. Later that year it introduced Swiggy Access, which offered ready-to-occupy kitchen locations to restaurant partners. The initiative was intended to allow restaurants to serve new neighborhoods without building conventional premises, and more than 1,000 Access kitchens were reported to be operating by 2019. In 2019 Swiggy began testing broader local commerce. Swiggy Stores enabled customers to order general products from local retailers, while Swiggy Go offered package and item delivery. In April 2020, Go was renamed Swiggy Genie. The COVID-19 crisis changed the economics of these initiatives. Restaurant restrictions reduced food-delivery activity and forced the company to cut about 1,100 jobs in May 2020. More than three-quarters of its cloud kitchens were also shut down during the pandemic. At the same time, Swiggy introduced alcohol delivery in Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Odisha, subject to applicable local rules. Swiggy launched Instamart in August 2020, using dark stores to provide rapid delivery of groceries and everyday products. In early 2021 it closed Swiggy Stores and made Instamart the central focus of its non-food retail strategy. Quick commerce became a major competitive arena, with Blinkit and Zepto generally ahead in market share, but Swiggy continued expanding the number and geographic distribution of its dark stores. The company broadened its dining ecosystem through the 2022 acquisition of Dineout from Times Internet. Dineout added restaurant discovery, table reservations, and dining-related consumer services. In 2023 Swiggy transferred its Access kitchen operations to Kitchens@ through a share-swap transaction, reducing its direct involvement in that infrastructure business. In January 2024 Swiggy reduced its workforce by approximately 400 employees, or about six percent of its workforce, as it prepared for an IPO and continued to review operating efficiency. Swiggy converted into a public limited company in April 2024 and confidentially filed for an initial public offering. The IPO launched in November 2024, marking its transition from a venture-backed private company to a publicly traded Indian enterprise. In December 2024 it added Scenes, an events and ticketing product. In May 2025 the company discontinued Genie, its same-day package-delivery service. By July 2025, Instamart had expanded to 127 Indian cities and added 41 dark stores, reflecting Swiggy's continued emphasis on quick commerce despite strong competition. As of 2025, Swiggy's food-delivery business operated in more than 700 Indian cities, while Instamart operated in more than 100 cities.
