Overview
Synopsys is a United States-based technology company that develops software and reusable intellectual property for designing, verifying, testing, and manufacturing semiconductors and electronic systems. Its core business is electronic design automation, commonly known as EDA: the specialized software used by chip companies to translate architectural concepts into manufacturable integrated circuits, analyze their performance, verify their behavior, and prepare designs for fabrication. Synopsys also supplies semiconductor IP, including reusable interface, connectivity, foundation, processor, security, and physical-layer components that customers can incorporate into system-on-chip products. The company originated in 1986 as Optimal Solutions in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. Its founding team commercialized logic-synthesis technology developed within General Electric's Advanced Computer-Aided Engineering Group. Logic synthesis became one of the important foundations of modern digital chip design because it helps convert high-level descriptions of circuit behavior into optimized gate-level implementations. The company adopted the name Synopsys and moved to Mountain View, California, in 1987. It completed its initial public offering in February 1992 and became a NASDAQ-listed company. Synopsys' portfolio spans digital and analog implementation, logic synthesis, timing analysis, physical design, simulation, formal verification, emulation, hardware-assisted verification, design-for-manufacturing, semiconductor IP, and engineering services. Widely known product families include Design Compiler, PrimeTime, IC Compiler, Fusion Compiler, VCS, Verdi, and the broader Verification Continuum. These tools are used by semiconductor manufacturers, fabless chip designers, integrated device manufacturers, electronic-system companies, and other organizations involved in advanced silicon development. The business has expanded beyond traditional EDA through acquisitions and internal development. Synopsys has purchased companies and product lines in electronic-system-level design, physical verification, technology computer-aided design, semiconductor IP, application security, and software quality. The acquisition of Avanti, completed in 2002 after litigation involving Cadence, strengthened Synopsys' position in physical design and related EDA workflows. More recently, software security offerings such as static analysis, software composition analysis, fuzz testing, and vulnerability management have complemented the company's semiconductor activities. Artificial intelligence has become a major strategic theme. Synopsys began exploring intelligent automation for EDA before introducing DSO.ai in 2020. The product applies reinforcement learning to search chip-implementation alternatives against power, performance, and area objectives. The company subsequently introduced VSO.ai for verification-space optimization and TSO.ai for test-space optimization, and later announced Synopsys.ai Copilot with Microsoft and Azure OpenAI services. These products aim to reduce manual iteration, improve coverage and optimization, and help engineering teams manage the growing complexity of chip design. Synopsys operates internationally, with substantial engineering and support organizations in North America, Europe, Asia, and Armenia. Its competitive environment is concentrated: Cadence Design Systems and Siemens EDA are its principal EDA rivals, while Arm is a major competitor and benchmark in semiconductor IP. Synopsys became part of the Nasdaq-100 and S&P 500 in 2017. In August 2023, the company designated COO Sassine Ghazi as successor to founder Aart de Geus; Ghazi became chief executive in January 2024, while de Geus moved to executive chairman. Synopsys announced its acquisition of Ansys in January 2024 and completed the transaction in July 2025, combining semiconductor design tools with multiphysics engineering simulation. The company therefore occup…
History
Synopsys began in 1986 as Optimal Solutions, a company established in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, to commercialize logic-synthesis technology associated with General Electric's Advanced Computer-Aided Engineering Group. The founding team included Aart de Geus, David Gregory, Alberto Sangiovanni-Vincentelli, and Bill Krieger. The company changed its name to Synopsys and relocated to Mountain View, California, in 1987. Its early development was tied to the increasing use of software automation in digital integrated-circuit design. Logic synthesis allowed engineers to describe intended hardware behavior at a higher level and use software to generate and optimize lower-level circuit structures. As chip complexity increased, Synopsys broadened its portfolio into timing analysis, physical implementation, simulation, verification, test, design-for-manufacturing, and reusable semiconductor IP. Synopsys became a public company through an initial public offering in February 1992 and listed its shares on NASDAQ. Over subsequent decades it used both organic development and acquisitions to build a broad design-flow platform. The 2002 integration of Avanti was particularly significant. Avanti brought physical-design, layout, technology-modeling, and related tools, but its acquisition occurred in the context of litigation with Cadence concerning alleged software theft. Synopsys paid approximately $265 million to settle the litigation; the settlement and acquisition remain among the most notable episodes in the company's corporate history. The company continued expanding into electronic-system-level design and embedded development. It acquired Virtio in 2006, adding virtual system-on-chip platform technology, and acquired CoWare in 2010, strengthening electronic-system-level design capabilities. Synopsys later entered software security and quality more deeply, including the acquisition of Code Dx in 2021. These activities extended the company beyond tools used solely by semiconductor designers. Synopsys also invested in high-performance computing and advanced automation. In 2006 it built an EDA-oriented supercomputer from commodity Linux servers and off-the-shelf hardware. The system appeared in the TOP500 ranking based on its LINPACK performance. The company became a constituent of the Nasdaq-100 and S&P 500 in 2017. Artificial intelligence became increasingly central to Synopsys' product strategy. The company describes exploratory work in intelligent EDA as beginning before 2017, with reinforcement-learning development becoming a formal effort in 2017. In 2020 it launched DSO.ai, which searches large implementation spaces for solutions that balance power, performance, and area. In 2023 it expanded the approach with VSO.ai for verification and TSO.ai for test optimization. Later that year, Synopsys announced Synopsys.ai Copilot in collaboration with Microsoft, bringing large-language-model assistance into chip-design workflows. Leadership transitioned from founder Aart de Geus to Sassine Ghazi. Ghazi was identified as de Geus's successor in August 2023 and became CEO in January 2024, while de Geus became executive chairman. The company also announced the proposed acquisition of Ansys in January 2024. The transaction, completed in July 2025, was designed to combine Synopsys' semiconductor-design expertise with Ansys' multiphysics simulation and engineering software. The integration created a broader system-design platform but was followed by reporting about restructuring and possible workforce reductions during fiscal 2026. Synopsys operates in a concentrated and strategically important market. Its principal EDA competitors are Cadence Design Systems and Siemens EDA, while Arm is a major participant in semiconductor IP. The company maintains engineering, sales, and support operations across the Americas, Europe, and Asia, with especially notable development centers in India and Armenia. Its business has also intersected with U.S. national-security and export-control policy because EDA software and semiconductor IP are important to advanced chip development. Reports concerning possible technology transfers to Chinese companies and subsequent export-license restrictions have added regulatory complexity to its international operations.
