Overview
T-FACE (ティーフェイス) is a mixed-use commercial complex located in Wakamiya-cho 1-chome and Nishi-machi 6-chome in Toyota, Aichi Prefecture, Japan, directly in front of Toyotashi Station. It is managed and operated by Toyota Machizukuri Co., Ltd. The facility occupies the Toyotashi Station West Exit Urban Redevelopment Building, a structure built as part of the Toyotashi Station West Exit redevelopment project. The building consists of two main wings: Building A (one basement floor and nine above-ground floors, plus a two-story penthouse) and Building B (one basement floor and eleven above-ground floors, plus a one-story penthouse). The complex is connected to both Meitetsu Toyotashi Station and Aichi Loop Line Shin-Toyota Station by a pedestrian deck. The complex originally opened on October 8, 1988, alongside the Toyoda Sogo department store, which occupied Building A floors 1–9 and Building B floors 4–11. T-FACE initially occupied only Building B floors 1–3. In 1997, following a major renovation, Toyoda Sogo withdrew from Building B, and the entire Building B became the T-FACE specialty store wing. After the Sogo group's bankruptcy in 2000, Toyoda Sogo closed, and in 2001 Matsuzakaya opened a new core store in Building A floors 1–6, with floors 7–9 also becoming part of T-FACE. Matsuzakaya Toyota closed on September 30, 2021, and the former Matsuzakaya space was fully integrated into T-FACE, with a pre-opening on March 23, 2022, and a grand opening on March 25, 2022. Nagoya Mitsukoshi Toyota opened on April 22, 2022. Today, T-FACE comprises all areas of Buildings A and B, plus the single-story City Plaza (which houses Saizeriya). The second floor, connected to the pedestrian deck, serves as the main entrance, and all sales floors are above ground. The food hall, equivalent to a department store basement, is on Building A's first floor. The complex hosts a variety of shops, including fashion, accessories, gourmet food, sweets, and pop-up shops, and regularly holds cultural workshops and events. It also provides ATMs for Aichi Bank, Mitsubishi UFJ Bank, Toyota Shinkin Bank, and JA Aichi Toyota. A parking discount service of up to three hours is offered by Toyota Machizukuri for customers using participating parking lots in central Toyota. T-FACE is a key retail hub in Toyota City, having survived the closures of two department store anchors. It continues to operate as a community-focused shopping and cultural center, with a mix of permanent tenants and limited-time sales events.
History
T-FACE traces its origins to the Toyotashi Station West Exit Urban Redevelopment Project, which aimed to revitalize the area in front of Toyotashi Station in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture. The redevelopment building was completed on October 6, 1988, and opened on October 8, 1988, comprising Building A (one basement floor, nine above-ground floors, and a two-story penthouse) and Building B (one basement floor, eleven above-ground floors, and a one-story penthouse). The core tenant was Toyoda Sogo, a department store established in 1986 with the cooperation of Toyota Motor Corporation and others; it was Sogo's first store in the Tokai region. Toyoda Sogo occupied Building A floors 1–9 and Building B floors 4–11, while T-FACE occupied Building B floors 1–3. The two buildings were connected by a pedestrian deck linking Meitetsu Toyotashi Station and Aichi Loop Line Shin-Toyota Station. The opening took place during a period of national mourning due to the worsening health of Emperor Showa, so no lavish opening ceremony was held, and the logo mark was changed from the usual red to green. On March 30, 1997, a major renovation costing 1.3 billion yen was completed. Toyoda Sogo withdrew from Building B, and the entire Building B became the T-FACE specialty store wing. However, only three years later, in 2000, the Sogo group filed for civil rehabilitation, and Toyoda Sogo closed on December 25, 2000. The operating company, Toyoda Sogo Co., Ltd., was declared bankrupt by the Tokyo District Court on April 18, 2001, after accumulating debts. To avoid the bankruptcy of the third-sector company Toyoda Urban Development and parking operators, Toyota City loaned 4.8 billion yen in public funds to another third-sector entity, Toyota Shonin, which acquired Toyoda Sogo's land and building shares. After Sogo's closure, Toyota City negotiated with local capital Matsuzakaya and Meitetsu Department Store, and Matsuzakaya agreed to open. In October 2001, Matsuzakaya Toyota opened as the new core store, occupying Building A floors 1–6 with a sales area of about 18,000 m², roughly 30% smaller than Toyoda Sogo. However, sales fell far short of the initial target of 20 billion yen per year, and the store remained in the red. In the fiscal year ending February 2007, sales were 10 billion yen, half of the estimate, and the second lowest among Matsuzakaya's eight stores at the time. After Matsuzakaya merged with Daimaru in 2007, the store was managed as a branch of the Nagoya store and turned profitable through streamlining. On April 2, 2020, J. Front Retailing announced that Matsuzakaya Toyota would close on September 30, 2021, exactly 20 years after its opening, due to intensifying competition from surrounding shopping malls and deteriorating profitability. This marked the second department store closure for the building. During this period, department stores in the Mikawa region closed one after another: HonoKuni Department Store (formerly Toyohashi Maruei) in Toyohashi closed on March 15, 2020, and Seibu Okazaki (inside Aeon Mall Okazaki) closed on August 31, 2020. With the closure of Matsuzakaya Toyota, department stores disappeared from the Mikawa region. After Matsuzakaya's closure, the former Matsuzakaya space on Building A floors 1–6 was integrated into T-FACE and fully renovated. A pre-opening was held on March 23, 2022, with tenants such as Seijo Ishii, and a grand opening followed on March 25, 2022. On April 22, 2022, Nagoya Mitsukoshi Toyota opened within the complex. As of 2023, T-FACE comprises all areas of Buildings A and B, plus the single-story City Plaza (which houses Saizeriya). The second floor, connected to the pedestrian deck, serves as the main entrance, and all sales floors are above ground. The food hall is on Building A's first floor. The complex continues to operate as a community-focused shopping and cultural center.
