Overview

T-Mobile US, Inc. is an American wireless telecommunications operator headquartered in Bellevue, Washington. It operates the T-Mobile consumer brand and owns or operates several related services and brands, including Metro by T-Mobile, Assurance Wireless, and, following its acquisition of Ka’ena Corporation, Mint Mobile and Ultra Mobile. The company serves postpaid and prepaid wireless customers, sells mobile devices and accessories, provides fixed wireless home internet, and operates a nationwide mobile network covering the continental United States, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The company originated in 1994 as VoiceStream Wireless PCS, a subsidiary of Western Wireless Corporation. VoiceStream initially built GSM-based personal communications service in metropolitan areas, complementing Western Wireless’s more rural cellular operations. Western Wireless spun VoiceStream off as an independent public company in 1999. In 2000, VoiceStream acquired regional GSM operators Omnipoint and Aerial Communications, expanding its footprint and consolidating their operations under the VoiceStream name. Deutsche Telekom acquired VoiceStream and regional operator Powertel in 2001. VoiceStream subsequently adopted the T-Mobile identity, first using the name T-Mobile USA and later becoming the company now known as T-Mobile US. The Deutsche Telekom relationship remains central to the brand: Deutsche Telekom is the namesake and majority shareholder, while T-Mobile US operates as the group’s principal U.S. wireless business. T-Mobile expanded through acquisitions and spectrum purchases during the 2000s and 2010s. Its acquisition of SunCom Wireless in 2008 added customers and coverage in the southeastern United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In 2013, T-Mobile combined with MetroPCS Communications in a reverse takeover. The resulting company retained the T-Mobile brand and became publicly traded under the TMUS symbol. MetroPCS was subsequently developed as a major prepaid offering and was later renamed Metro by T-Mobile. The company’s most influential commercial strategy has been the “Un-carrier” program, introduced in 2013. The program challenged common U.S. wireless practices such as long-term service contracts, complicated plan structures, device-upgrade restrictions, and certain customer fees. T-Mobile introduced simpler plan designs, device financing, unlimited-data offerings, data carryover and other customer-facing initiatives. These moves helped establish the company as a disruptive, value-oriented challenger, although some practices, including zero-rating and network-management policies, attracted regulatory and net-neutrality criticism. T-Mobile agreed to merge with Sprint in 2018. The transaction faced opposition from the U.S. Department of Justice and a multistate lawsuit, but it received federal approval and survived the state challenge. The merger closed on April 1, 2020, making T-Mobile the surviving company and giving it Sprint’s customers, spectrum, network assets, retail operations, and Assurance Wireless business. The Sprint brand was retired in August 2020. The combination materially increased T-Mobile’s scale and strengthened its mid-band spectrum position for 5G deployment. In the 2020s, T-Mobile broadened its consumer reach beyond conventional mobile plans. It acquired Mint Mobile and Ultra Mobile through the purchase of Ka’ena Corporation, retaining them as separate low-cost and specialized brands. It also agreed to acquire the wireless operations of UScellular, including customers, spectrum, and tower rights; the transaction closed in August 2025 after regulatory approval. T-Mobile continues to compete across postpaid wireless, prepaid service, mobile broadband, connected devices, and fixed wireless home internet, while transitioning legacy 2G and 3G technologies toward newer network generations.

History

T-Mobile developed as the international mobile brand of Deutsche Telekom. Its American foundation was VoiceStream Wireless, which was spun out of Western Wireless in 1999. Deutsche Telekom agreed in 2000 to acquire VoiceStream and Powertel, and completed the transactions in 2001. VoiceStream was placed within Deutsche Telekom’s T-Mobile International organization, creating an important bridge between the group’s European mobile operations and its American expansion. In 2002, the American operation began introducing the T-Mobile name in markets including Las Vegas, Los Angeles and San Francisco. The business used GSM technology and gradually expanded its geographic reach. The shared branding connected the U.S. operator with Deutsche Telekom’s broader international mobile portfolio, while local operating companies continued to manage their own networks, products and regulatory relationships. The American business spent much of the 2000s competing against larger U.S. carriers. In 2011, AT&T proposed acquiring T-Mobile US for $39 billion. The transaction faced strong antitrust resistance and ultimately collapsed. The failed deal left T-Mobile independent and encouraged a more aggressive effort to improve its competitive position through network investment, spectrum acquisition and commercial differentiation. T-Mobile’s combination with MetroPCS closed in 2013. The combined company began trading as T-Mobile US, Inc. on the New York Stock Exchange on May 1, 2013, under the ticker TMUS. MetroPCS continued as a prepaid-oriented consumer brand and later became Metro by T-Mobile. The transaction gave T-Mobile additional spectrum and scale while reinforcing its focus on value-conscious consumers. Beginning in 2013, T-Mobile presented itself as the “Un-carrier.” Rather than competing only through conventional rate plans, it publicized a series of moves designed to address customer complaints about annual contracts, data overage charges, upgrade restrictions, international usage and carrier complexity. Advertising used humor, competitor comparisons and a direct executive voice. The approach helped establish T-Mobile as a challenger brand and made pricing and service-policy changes central to its identity. T-Mobile and Sprint announced an agreement to merge in April 2018. The proposed combination generated extensive debate about competition, employment, spectrum and the number of national carriers. After federal and state litigation and a lengthy approval process, the merger closed on April 1, 2020. T-Mobile US survived as the operating company and combined the two networks, spectrum portfolios and customer bases. The Sprint consumer brand was retired on August 2, 2020. One of the transaction’s remedies was the sale of Sprint’s prepaid business to DISH, which T-Mobile later announced as completed. The post-merger company concentrated on integrating the networks and using its mid-band spectrum position to accelerate nationwide 5G. Its business broadened from mobile phone service into fixed wireless access, home broadband, connected devices and enterprise connectivity. T-Mobile for Business promoted use cases in areas such as logistics, manufacturing, security and distributed workforces. Home Internet became a significant adjacent proposition, using the mobile network to serve households without requiring a traditional wired last-mile connection. Expansion continued through infrastructure and regional-operator transactions. T-Mobile and EQT closed a joint venture to acquire Lumos in April 2025. Lumos brought a fiber network serving communities in the Mid-Atlantic, while the joint venture planned further expansion. In August 2025, T-Mobile completed its acquisition of substantially all of UScellular’s wireless operations, including customers, stores and specified spectrum assets, as well as certain Iowa wireless operations. These transactions illustrate the company’s effort to combine mobile scale with broader broadband reach. The brand’s current communications combine its historic challenger tone with claims about network leadership, reliability and innovation. Campaigns continue to use celebrities, humor, sports and experiential marketing, while business advertising increasingly stresses security, intelligent network performance and satellite-enabled coverage. T-Mobile remains an active brand within Deutsche Telekom’s international portfolio and a major U.S. wireless and broadband operator.

SpaceX said the added 800 MHz low-band spectrum would fill a key signal-penetration gap for its Starlink Mobile service, enabling a hybrid satellite-terrestrial network, and the company said the deal would clear a major obstacle for Starlink Mobile to become a major US mobile carrier. After the report, shares of AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon fell in after-hours trading amid concerns about increased competition and a potential price war.
