Overview

Tancacha is a locality in the center of Córdoba Province, Argentina, in the Tercero Arriba department. According to the 2022 INDEC census it had 5,638 inhabitants, and it lies on Provincial Route 6, about 100 km from the city of Córdoba. The town was founded on 15 October 1913, when construction of the railway station was completed; the patronal feast is celebrated on the same day in honor of Saint Teresa of Jesus. The name derives from the contraction of Tankay (to push) and Kancha (playing field, site, corral), referring to a pushing game practiced by the indigenous peoples of the area; legend holds that a cacique named Tancacho lent his name to the area, and in 1877 José María Ferreyra named a ranch "Estancia Tancacho." When the railway was built, English workers are said to have feminized the name for the station, giving "Tancacha." The local economy is agricultural and livestock-based. Tancacha is the site of one of the main grain collection and processing operations of Bunge Argentina, with a plant producing soybean oil, pellets, flours and lecithins. Local SMEs include Molyagro S.A. and Alimentos Tancacha S.A., a soybean oil and expeller factory with a biodiesel production project, with shareholding participation by the Gentili and Gioda families. Main crops are soybean, corn, peanut, wheat, sorghum and oats. Three collection firms serve producers: Agricultores Unidos de Tancacha, Hesar Hnos S.A. and Acosta Cereales S.A. There are also numerous family businesses and SMEs related to metalworking and industrial assembly. The town has 1,660 homes. The municipal government provides services through its official website, including procedures and services, revenue, automotive, commerce, suppliers, driver's licenses, hospital, cemetery, ordinances, official gazette, deliberative council, events, civil registry, court of accounts, cadastre, minor offenses court, transitional homes, student scholarships, and government areas such as the mayor's office, government secretariat, urban development, culture and education, general coordination, minor offenses court, economy and finance, health, and communication and protocol. The site also lists useful telephone numbers for emergency services.

History

Tancacha was founded on 15 October 1913, when the railway station was completed. The patronal feast is celebrated on the same day in honor of Saint Teresa of Jesus. The name comes from the contraction of Tankay (to push) and Kancha (playing field, site, corral), meaning "field for the pushing game," a game played by the indigenous peoples who inhabited the area. Legend tells of a cacique named Tancacho who fought bravely against the colonizers and whose name endured; a place was called "Pocitos de Tancacha," and later a ranch was named Tancacho. In 1877 José María Ferreyra bought a ranch in the area and named it "Estancia Tancacho." When the railway was built, the English builders decided to give that name to the town station but feminized it, believed to be a phonetic deformation due to the defective Spanish of those laying the rails. The town's coat of arms follows tradition and considers the existence of the legendary cacique; on 22 June 1965 the Junta de Genealogía y Heráldica in Buenos Aires wrote to Francisco García, Secretary General of the Centro de Empleados de Comercio de Tancacha and promoter of the coat of arms. The flag has three fields of different colors separated by a small white line: light blue for the Argentine flag and the homeland; red for the Tancacha coat of arms and immigrants, taking the color of the flags of Spain, Italy and much of the countries from which they came; green for the fertile land suitable for agriculture, the main resource of the locality; a yellow circle for the rising sun, symbol of a thriving town, crossed by an arrow identifying the aboriginal, primitive natural inhabitant of these lands; and parallel white lines representing the railway tracks and Tancacha Station, whose inauguration date gave official date to the founding of the locality, 15 October 1913. The economy is agricultural and livestock by excellence, being the seat of one of the main grain collection companies of South America and the world: the oil company Bunge Argentina, which has in the area a grain collection and processing plant with an area of several hectares, where soybean oil, pellets, flours and lecithins are made. The locality also has local SMEs for cereal processing, including Molyagro S.A. and Alimentos Tancacha S.A. with shareholding participation of the Gentili and Gioda families, a soybean oil and expeller factory with a biodiesel production project. Main crops are soybean, corn, peanut, wheat, sorghum and oats. Services for producers are provided by three collection firms: Agricultores Unidos de Tancacha, Hesar Hnos S.A. and Acosta Cereales S.A. There are also many family businesses and SMEs related to metalworking and industrial assembly. The area's industry is closely tied to agriculture. There are 1,660 homes in the locality. Education includes primary schools (Escuela José María Paz, Instituto Santiago Ramón y Cajal, Escuela General José de San Martín), secondary schools (IMB Instituto Manuel Belgrano, Instituto Santiago Ramón y Cajal, CENMA Río Tercero Anexo Tancacha, Escuela Experimental PRoA Tancacha), and a special school (Escuela Especial Tancacha). Clubs include Club Deportivo Huracán de Tancacha and CARIB, Centro Artístico Recreativo Instituto Belgrano. Population was 5,638 (INDEC 2022), a 6% increase over 5,298 (INDEC 2010).
