Overview

Tarros is an Italian shipping and logistics group with origins dating back to 1828, when the Musso family's forwarding house M.A. Grendi & Figlio began operations. The modern shipping company was established in 1963 in Cagliari as T.A.R.R.O.S. SpA — Traghetti Autotrasporti Rapidi Regione Organizzazione Sarda — by Ugo Musso, marking the family's transition from freight forwarding to shipowning. Under Giorgio Musso, together with his father Ugo and brother Bruno, the business expanded, and in 1966 the Tarros shipping group was formed in Cagliari with the goal of containerising general cargo between the Italian mainland (with a terminal port in Genoa) and Sardinia. Tarros is headquartered in La Spezia, with its operational centre at the Terminal del Golfo. It operates container and Ro-Ro liner services throughout the Mediterranean, connecting Italy with destinations in France, Spain, Tunisia, Malta, Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, Greece, Turkey, Libya, Syria, Lebanon, and, via transhipment, Ukraine in the Black Sea. The company also provides multimodal transport, maritime agency services (including through a network of associated foreign agencies), hinterland logistics, road transport, and brokerage. In 2007 the Tarros Group reported revenue of 85 million euros and handled approximately 135,000 containers. Following the death of Giorgio Musso in 2008, Alberto Musso — managing director of the group since 2002 — was appointed president. The group maintains directly managed or associated agencies in Italy, the United Kingdom, Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, Malta, Syria, Georgia, Slovenia, Lebanon, Greece, Tunisia, Libya, Portugal, and Turkey.

History

The Musso family's involvement in shipping and forwarding began in 1828 with the establishment of the M.A. Grendi & Figlio forwarding house. Over generations, the family built expertise in freight movement, particularly between the Italian mainland and Sardinia. In 1963, commendatore Ugo Musso founded T.A.R.R.O.S. SpA — Traghetti Autotrasporti Rapidi Regione Organizzazione Sarda — in Cagliari, formally transitioning the family from forwarding to shipowning. Giorgio Musso, alongside his father Ugo and brother Bruno (shipowner of the Grendi line), expanded the family business, and in 1966 the Tarros shipping group was constituted in Cagliari with the aim of containerising general cargo between the mainland (terminal port Genoa) and Sardinia. In 1966, T.A.R.R.O.S. acquired a vessel with a distinctive wartime past, designed with a stern door and adapted for wheeled cargo — a Ro-Ro ship. Named Vento del Golfo, it inaugurated the "Venti" series. In December of the same year, the company launched its second Ro-Ro, Vento di Levante. Both entered service in 1967 and are regarded as the first two ships to regularly carry containers in liner service in the Mediterranean according to ISO standards. In 1969, Tarros designed new types of Ro-Ro container ships for ports lacking container-handling equipment, called the Tarros Class, with the prototype Vento di Tramontana entering service on the Genoa–Cagliari route. In 1971, the company moved its operational base from Genoa to La Spezia. In 1975, a service to Libya was established. Within a few years, Tarros covered all western Mediterranean destinations, eventually building its current network: France, Spain, Tunisia, Malta, Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, Greece, Turkey, and, via transhipment, Ukraine in the Black Sea. In 2007, the Tarros Group reported revenue of 85 million euros and transported approximately 135,000 containers, covering maritime lines, multimodal transport, maritime agency (including through associated foreign agencies), hinterland logistics, road transport, and brokerage. In 2008, following the death of his father Giorgio, Alberto Musso — managing director of the group since 2002 — was appointed president.
