Overview

Tatts Group was an Australian gambling and gaming-services group built around the long-running Tattersall's business. Its origins are generally traced to George Adams, an English migrant who began taking bets in Sydney in 1881 and later established a more formal lottery operation in Hobart in 1895 with Tasmanian government support. Over time, the business expanded beyond Tasmania through a combination of licences, acquisitions and operating agreements, becoming one of the most important private-sector participants in Australia's regulated gambling industry. Before its merger with Tabcorp, Tatts Group operated through three principal divisions: lotteries, wagering and gaming solutions. Lotteries was its largest and most strategically significant activity. The group operated or held rights associated with lottery businesses in several Australian jurisdictions, including Tatts Lottery in Victoria, Tasmania and the Northern Territory; Golden Casket in Queensland; NSW Lotteries in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory; and SA Lotteries in South Australia. These operations gave Tatts a dominant position in Australian lotteries, although the precise legal structure and exclusivity of its rights differed by state and territory. In June 2016, the company introduced The Lott as a national-facing brand bringing its jurisdictional lottery operations together. The change also moved online lottery purchasing from Tatts.com to thelott.com. The wagering division developed through Tattersalls' operations and the acquisition and combination of UniTAB assets. It offered racing, sports and totalisator betting through retail outlets and online channels. Its retail network used several inherited names, including TAB, TattsBet and Unitab. In 2014, Tatts announced that these wagering properties would be progressively unified under the UBET brand, with the Ubet.com service providing national online access to racing and sports wagering products. The group held wagering licences in Queensland, South Australia, the Northern Territory and Tasmania, with the rights and operating conditions governed by each jurisdiction's regulatory framework. Gaming Solutions represented a technology and infrastructure side of the business rather than a consumer gambling brand alone. MaxGaming supplied monitoring and related services for electronic gaming machines, connecting licensed machines to systems used to verify activity, calculate gaming taxes and support prize integrity. It held monitoring licences in New South Wales, Queensland and the Northern Territory and had a particularly strong position in Queensland. ByteCraft provided electronics and field-maintenance capabilities, including work on gaming machines and a significant maintenance contract for Telstra's payphone network. The group also owned or operated businesses outside its core Australian lottery and wagering portfolio. Tatts Pokies ran more than 13,000 gaming machines in Victoria until its licence expired in August 2012. The resulting compensation dispute with the Victorian government became one of the group's most consequential legal matters. Tatts also acquired Tote Tasmania in 2012 for AU$103 million, bringing Tasmania's previously government-owned totalisator wagering operation into its portfolio. In 2016, it sold its United Kingdom gaming-arcade business, Talarius, to Novomatic for a reported AU$210 million. Tatts Group became publicly listed in 2005, ending the privately inherited profit structure associated with the historic Tattersall's business and allowing Tattersall's heirs to sell their interests. On 22 December 2017, Tatts Group merged with Tabcorp Holdings Limited. The combined business operated under the Tabcorp brand, and Tatts Group ceased to exist as an independent listed corporate group. Some of its former businesses continued under successor structures and brands. In 2022, Tabcorp separated its lotteries and keno activities into The Lottery Corporation, which listed on the ASX, while the wagering business remained with Tabcorp. Tatts Group is therefore best understood as a defunct Australian corporate gambling brand whose assets and operating identities survive in successor businesses rather than as an active standalone company.

History

Tatts Group's history is rooted in the Tattersall's gambling business associated with George Adams. Adams moved from England to Australia as a teenager and worked in several occupations before taking bets on horse races while operating a Sydney public house in 1881. In 1895, after moving to Hobart, he established a more formal lottery operation with support from the Tasmanian government. The enterprise gradually expanded beyond Tasmania as Australian states and territories developed separate regulatory arrangements for lotteries, racing and gaming. The historic business was distinctive in its ownership structure. When Tattersall's was established, Adams arranged for profits to benefit the families of employees and associates. Later generations became known as the Tattersall's heirs and received interests in the business. This structure remained an important feature of the company's history until Tatts Group listed on the Australian Securities Exchange in 2005. The listing gave those beneficiaries an opportunity to sell interests and allowed public investors to participate in the company for the first time. Tatts expanded through both organic growth and acquisitions. Its lottery division assembled a portfolio of state and territory operations, including Tatts Lottery, Golden Casket, NSW Lotteries and SA Lotteries. This structure reflected Australia's state-based gambling regulation, in which licences and operating rights were generally awarded jurisdiction by jurisdiction. The lottery businesses together gave Tatts a near-monopoly position in much of the Australian market. In 2016, the group introduced The Lott as a national consumer brand for its lottery activities and shifted online sales to a dedicated website. Wagering became another central pillar. Tattersalls' established betting activities were combined with assets associated with UniTAB, helping create the modern Tatts Group in 2007. The group subsequently operated retail and online racing and sports wagering in Queensland, South Australia, the Northern Territory and Tasmania. Its inherited retail brands included TAB, TattsBet and Unitab. To simplify the portfolio and present a more consistent customer identity, Tatts announced in 2014 that these operations would be brought together under UBET. The company also developed a gaming-solutions division. MaxGaming operated monitoring networks for electronic gaming machines in New South Wales, Queensland and the Northern Territory. Such monitoring services supported regulatory oversight by recording machine activity, helping calculate taxes and confirming that prizes were correctly handled. ByteCraft added electronics and maintenance expertise. Although acquired largely for gaming-machine support, ByteCraft also worked in other technical fields, including maintenance of Telstra's payphone networks. Several transactions and disputes shaped the later history of the group. Tote Tasmania, a government-owned Tasmanian wagering company, was privatised and sold to Tatts for AU$103 million in 2012. Tatts Pokies, which had operated more than 13,000 gaming machines in Victoria since 1994, lost its licence in August 2012 when the authorisation was not renewed. Tatts argued that a mid-1990s agreement entitled it to compensation for infrastructure investment if successor operators received gaming rights. In 2014, the Supreme Court of Victoria accepted Tatts' interpretation and awarded more than AU$451 million before costs and interest; the Victorian government appealed. The group later sold Talarius, its UK gaming-arcade operation, to Novomatic in 2016. Tatts Group's independent corporate life ended with its merger with Tabcorp on 22 December 2017. The merged company continued under the Tabcorp identity, while Tatts' former businesses were integrated into successor operations. In 2022, Tabcorp separated its lotteries and keno activities into The Lottery Corporation, which became an ASX-listed company. This later demerger illustrates how the assets assembled under Tatts Group continued to operate, even though the Tatts corporate brand itself was no longer active.
