Overview

Tecan is a Swiss life-science technology company whose core business is the automation of laboratory workflows. Founded in 1980 as Technische Analysegeräte, the company initially developed measuring, analytical and laboratory devices before concentrating increasingly on automated liquid handling and related instrumentation. Its systems are used by pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, university and research laboratories, clinical diagnostic laboratories, forensic organizations and medical-technology manufacturers. The company operates through two closely connected business roles. Under its own brand, Tecan supplies laboratory automation platforms, liquid-handling systems, microplate readers, consumables and workflow solutions. It also acts as an original-equipment manufacturer, designing and producing instruments, components, pumps, modules and medical devices that partner companies incorporate into products sold under other brands. This OEM activity has broadened Tecan's exposure beyond the direct laboratory-instrument market and made the company a supplier to diagnostic and medical-device businesses. Tecan's product portfolio includes automated liquid-handling workstations, integrated workcells, sample-preparation systems, multimode microplate readers, automated laboratory logistics and specialized components. Products such as the Freedom EVO and Fluent platforms address flexible laboratory automation, while the Infinite family is associated with multimode microplate reading. The company also supplies technologies for genomics, proteomics, drug discovery, clinical testing, immunoassays, next-generation sequencing workflows and other analytical applications. Tecan's early development was marked by rapid internationalization and a period of financial difficulty. It established a North American presence in 1982, expanded into Asia in 1986 and acquired several businesses during the 1980s. After financial problems led to a major restructuring around 1989–1990, the company sold many subsidiaries and refocused on laboratory automation. It subsequently rebuilt through product development, international sales and selective acquisitions. Significant product and corporate milestones include the Genesis automation series in 1995, the Freedom EVO platform in 2003, and expansion through acquisitions between 2014 and 2021 into immunoassays, sample preparation, laboratory components, next-generation sequencing and medical-device manufacturing. Tecan is headquartered in Männedorf, with research and production activities in North America, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region, and a reported sales and service network covering 52 countries. The company is listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange under the ticker TECN.

History

Tecan was founded in Switzerland on March 18, 1980, by engineers Heinz Abplanalp, Heini Maurer, Heinz Möckli and Gallus Blater. The name originated from Technische Analysegeräte. Its first office was located in Abplanalp's home in Hombrechtikon, and early instruments were assembled in improvised premises that included renovated barns, apartments and warehouses. The founders aimed to develop measuring, analytical and laboratory-automation equipment. Tecan established Tecan US in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in 1982 to support North American sales and marketing, together with a production operation for the US market. In 1984, the finance company Zelux acquired a substantial minority stake. Tecan entered automated pipetting in 1985 with the Sampler 500 series, described as a process-controlled automated pipetting platform. During the following years, the company expanded aggressively, opened Tecan Asia in Singapore and acquired businesses including Cavro Scientific Instruments, an OEM manufacturer of liquid-handling components, and SLT Laborinstrumente in Austria. This rapid expansion created a complex corporate structure and was followed by financial difficulties in 1989. Share trading was temporarily suspended, and in 1990, under CEO Hans Widmer, Tecan sold many subsidiaries and narrowed its focus. The continuing operations centered on liquid-handling robotics production in Switzerland, the United States and Austria, supported by selected sales centers. The consolidation restored profitability. Founder Heinz Abplanalp left in 1990, followed by the other founding members in 1991. Gottlieb Knoch became a major shareholder, board president and CEO in 1993. The company pursued operational standardization and product development during the 1990s. Its production sites obtained ISO 9001 certification in 1994, and the Genesis laboratory-automation series was launched in 1995. Perkin-Elmer acquired Knoch's shareholding in 1997, but later sold its Tecan shares on the open market. Tecan was restructured and returned to the main segment of the SWX Swiss Exchange in 1999. A marketing collaboration with Abbott Laboratories around the Genesis FE 500 Workcell followed in 1998. Tecan moved its headquarters to Männedorf in 2001. The company continued to build scale in laboratory automation, with more than 5,000 Genesis platforms reported sold within two years. The Freedom EVO platform was launched in 2003. In 2005, Tecan acquired REMP, a Swiss supplier of automated laboratory and logistics systems. Its product development also included the Infinite series of multimode microplate readers, which received innovation recognition in Austria in 2006. From 2014 onward, Tecan used acquisitions to broaden its capabilities and address adjacent parts of the life-science value chain. IBL International added immunoassay expertise; Sias expanded OEM laboratory automation; SPEware contributed sample-preparation solutions; Pulssar added piston pumps; and NuGEN brought next-generation sequencing kits and consumables. In 2021, the acquisition of Paramit extended Tecan's medical-device and life-science-instrument development and manufacturing platform. Today, Tecan combines branded laboratory automation with OEM engineering and manufacturing, serving customers across research, diagnostics, biopharmaceuticals, forensics and medical technology.
