Overview
Technicolor Group was the final operating identity of a long-running entertainment-technology and production-services business associated with the Technicolor name. Although its corporate history was connected to the Technicolor motion-picture technology pioneered in the United States, the group described in the Technicolor Group article was primarily a services company rather than a manufacturer of color-film systems. It supplied visual effects, animation, motion graphics, virtual production, advertising content, post-production and related creative services to studios, broadcasters, streaming platforms, game publishers, agencies and major brands. The modern business was developed within the French media and electronics group Thomson, which acquired Technicolor from Carlton Communications in 2001. Thomson renamed itself Technicolor SA in 2010, using the historically recognized Technicolor name across a wider portfolio of entertainment-technology activities. In 2014, the company consolidated its digital production, post-production and digital-distribution operations into Technicolor Production Services. That division brought together businesses with different creative specialisms and international footprints, including Moving Picture Company, The Mill, Mikros Animation and Mr. X. The group also expanded its animation capabilities through the acquisition of OuiDo! Productions, which became Technicolor Animation Productions. A major reorganization followed in 2021. Technicolor SA sold its post-production unit to Streamland Media and reshaped the remaining production-services operation as Technicolor Creative Studios. The new structure was intended to focus on film, episodic television, gaming, advertising and brand experiences. Christian Roberton became chief executive of the standalone creative-studios business, while Richard Moat remained chief executive of the parent company. The studio portfolio included MPC, The Mill, Mikros Animation and Mr. X, with the businesses operating through recognizable specialist brands rather than as a single consumer-facing production label. In 2022, Technicolor Creative Studios was separated from Technicolor SA through a spin-off and became independently listed on Euronext Paris. The former parent retained a minority interest initially, while its remaining connected-home and DVD activities were subsequently associated with Vantiva. Technicolor Creative Studios later simplified its corporate identity to Technicolor Group in May 2024. At its peak, the group had a global production network and participated in high-profile film, television, advertising and game projects, including work connected with The Lion King, Prehistoric Planet and major advertising campaigns. The company then entered a rapid decline. In February 2025, its United Kingdom business entered administration and the French company entered receivership after the group announced plans to close its United States offices. During March 2025, separate buyers acquired important parts of the business. TransPerfect acquired Technicolor Games and later acquired French assets associated with MPC, The Mill and Mikros Animation service work. Rodeo FX acquired most of Mikros Animation and selected Technicolor Canada assets, while Boris Hertzog acquired Mikros Animation's television division and French intellectual property, including the return of the OuiDo! Productions identity. These disposals marked the practical breakup of the operating group. The Technicolor trademark itself is now held by Tailsman Brands, Inc., operating as Established Incorporated.
History
The Technicolor name originated with the American motion-picture technology company founded in the 1910s by Herbert Kalmus, Daniel F. Comstock and W. B. Westcott. The technology became associated with color cinematography, but the later Technicolor Group was principally a creative-services and production organization. The modern corporate lineage passed through several ownership changes, including the acquisition of Technicolor by MacAndrews & Forbes in 1982 and its sale to Carlton Communications in 1988. In 2001, Thomson Multimedia acquired Technicolor from Carlton for approximately $2.1 billion. Thomson renamed itself Technicolor SA in 2010, extending the Technicolor identity across its entertainment-technology businesses. In 2014, it grouped digital production, post-production and digital distribution activities into Technicolor Production Services. The division expanded through the acquisition of OuiDo! Productions, which became Technicolor Animation Productions, and through the incorporation of established creative studios such as MPC, The Mill, Mikros Animation and Mr. X. Technicolor SA sold its post-production unit to Streamland Media in May 2021. Later that month, the remaining production-services operation was reorganized as Technicolor Creative Studios, with a stated focus on film, episodic content, gaming, advertising and brand experiences. Christian Roberton led the new creative-studios business, reporting within the wider Technicolor SA structure to Richard Moat. The business also reorganized its brands: MPC Advertising was integrated into The Mill, while MPC Film, MPC Episodic and Mr. X were brought together under the MPC identity. Technicolor SA announced in 2022 that it would spin off a majority of Technicolor Creative Studios to shareholders while retaining a minority holding. The separation was completed in September 2022, when Technicolor Creative Studios became an independently listed company on Euronext Paris. The remaining businesses of Technicolor SA were subsequently associated with Vantiva. In May 2024, the creative-studios company adopted the Technicolor Group name. The group experienced a severe deterioration in 2024 and 2025. In February 2025, its UK operation entered administration and the French entity entered receivership. Assets were sold to different buyers during March. TransPerfect acquired Technicolor Games and later parts of the French MPC, The Mill and Mikros Animation service businesses. Rodeo FX acquired most of Mikros Animation and selected Canadian assets. Boris Hertzog acquired Mikros Animation's television division and French intellectual property, restoring the OuiDo! Productions name in that part of the business. These transactions effectively ended Technicolor Group as an operating group. The Technicolor trademark is held separately by Tailsman Brands, Inc., doing business as Established Incorporated.
