Overview
Teisan Warehouse Co., Ltd. (帝蚕倉庫株式会社) is a Japanese warehousing company headquartered in Tsurumi-ku, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture. Its origins lie in the silk trade: the Imperial Silk Company (帝国蚕糸株式会社), founded in 1920 to weather the post-World War I raw-silk panic, was dissolved in 1923 after achieving its purpose. To put the remaining assets to use, the government built a warehouse in Kitanakadori, Naka-ku, Yokohama, and silk merchants entered into a lease agreement with the government; in 1926 the Imperial Silk Warehousing Co., Ltd. (帝国蚕糸倉庫株式会社) was established to operate the facility. After World War II, the company changed its name to Teisan Warehouse Co., Ltd. in 1947. Although the silk industry declined, the company leveraged Yokohama's advantageous location and continued as a port warehousing business. It expanded its network over the decades: a Tokyo sales office opened in Shinagawa, Tokyo in 1973; a sales office opened at Daikoku Pier in Tsurumi-ku, Yokohama in 1982; and the Tokyo office moved to Oi Pier in 1998. In 2005 the head office function was relocated to Tsurumi-ku, Yokohama. In 2014 the old Kitanakadori warehouse building was designated a historic building by the City of Yokohama, and in 2022 an annex to the Yokohama Logistics Center was completed. The company publishes its business guide, business locations, corporate information, recruitment information, and contact details on its official website. Its corporate history has been documented in company histories published in 1964, 1989, and 1995. It remains an active warehousing operator in the Yokohama port area.
History
The company's history begins with the Imperial Silk Company (帝国蚕糸株式会社), founded in 1920 to overcome the raw-silk panic that followed World War I. Having achieved its purpose, that company was dissolved in 1923. To make use of its residual assets, the government constructed a warehouse in Kitanakadori, Naka-ku, Yokohama, and silk merchants concluded a lease agreement with the government. In 1926, the Imperial Silk Warehousing Co., Ltd. (帝国蚕糸倉庫株式会社) was established to operate the warehouse. After World War II, in 1947, the company changed its name to Teisan Warehouse Co., Ltd. (帝蚕倉庫株式会社). Although the silk industry declined, the company took advantage of Yokohama's geographical position and continued its business as a port warehousing operator. In 1973, it opened a Tokyo sales office in Shinagawa, Tokyo. In 1982, it opened a sales office at Daikoku Pier in Tsurumi-ku, Yokohama. In 1998, the Tokyo sales office was relocated to Oi Pier. In 2005, the company moved its head office function to Tsurumi-ku, Yokohama. In 2014, the old warehouse building in Kitanakadori was designated a historic building by the City of Yokohama. In 2022, the annex building of the Yokohama Logistics Center was completed. The company has published its corporate history in several volumes: Teisan Warehouse 35-Year History (1964), Teisan Warehouse 60-Year History (1989), and 70 Years of Progress (1995).
