Overview

Telent is a British telecommunications and technology-services company that designs, installs, operates and maintains communications networks, control systems and digital infrastructure. Its work is concentrated in sectors where communications and operational technology are mission-critical, including railways, roads, emergency services, defence, telecoms operators, enterprises and government. The company was created in 2006 during the break-up of Marconi Corporation. The new name was applied to the United Kingdom and German services businesses that remained after Ericsson acquired most of Marconi’s telecommunications assets and obtained the rights to the Marconi name. Telent therefore inherited a substantial technical and organisational lineage from the General Electric Company (GEC), GEC Telecommunications, GEC Plessey Telecommunications and Marconi Communications. The deeper history of this business lineage reaches back to The Wireless Telegraph & Signal Company, established by Guglielmo Marconi in 1897. Telent’s principal role is that of a systems integrator and long-term infrastructure-services partner rather than a mass-market consumer brand. It combines engineering, network management, software, field maintenance, communications design and professional services. Its activities include enterprise and operational software, emergency-services communications, fibre and mobile-network planning, warehouse and logistics systems, rail and metro communications, traffic-management infrastructure, radio networks and support for legacy telecommunications platforms such as BT’s System X network. The company expanded its service portfolio through acquisitions after its formation. In 2008 it bought TSEU Group, an intelligent-traffic specialist; the Alan Campbell Group, a communications-infrastructure provider; and Premises Networks, a telecommunications-services business. In 2021 it acquired Harlequin Group, strengthening its professional-services work for mobile operators and its fibre-network design and planning capabilities. Telent also introduced a private 5G network service in 2021. Long-term public infrastructure contracts have been central to Telent’s development. It has supported Openreach’s access network through a major services arrangement, delivered nationwide road-communications infrastructure for Highways England and National Highways, and worked with Network Rail on railway control, telecommunications and station systems. Its Network Rail SCADA programme is replacing numerous legacy electrical-control systems with a modern supervisory and data-acquisition platform. Other work has included Coastguard radio-site fibre connectivity, West Coast Main Line telecommunications upgrades, railway telecoms renewal in Wales and the Western Region, and communications infrastructure for HS2 through a joint venture with Hitachi Rail. Telent has changed ownership several times. Pension Insurance Corporation acquired the company in 2007, after which it became private and its shares were delisted. Edmund Truell acquired Telent in 2017, and J.C. Flowers later held a controlling or sizeable interest. In August 2025, M Group Services acquired Telent for an undisclosed amount, making Telent part of a larger infrastructure-services group. Telent continues to operate as an active specialist engineering and technology-services business, with operational sites across the United Kingdom and Ireland and additional historical links to Germany.

History

Telent’s corporate lineage begins with GEC Telecommunications Limited, established in September 1961 as a telecommunications division of the General Electric Company. In 1988 the operation became part of the GEC Plessey Telecommunications joint venture. Following the restructuring and break-up of GPT during the 1990s, the business was renamed Marconi Communications Limited in 1998 as GEC adopted the Marconi name for its telecommunications activities. In 2006 Ericsson acquired most of Marconi Corporation’s telecommunications assets, including rights associated with the Marconi name. The United Kingdom and German services activities not included in that transaction were renamed Telent in January 2006. This created the present brand while preserving a long-established engineering base in telecommunications, transport and network services. An attempted acquisition by Fortress was blocked that year by Polygon, a shareholder hedge fund. Telent moved from Coventry to Warwick’s Opus 40 business park in 2007. Later that year Pension Insurance Corporation acquired the company in a transaction involving Telent’s inherited pension scheme, which had tens of thousands of members and substantial liabilities. The acquisition was followed by the delisting of the company’s shares and its transition to private ownership. The company broadened its capabilities through several acquisitions in 2008: TSEU Group, focused on intelligent traffic systems; the Alan Campbell Group, focused on communications infrastructure; and Premises Networks, a telecommunications-services provider. Telent subsequently developed a business model based on long-term infrastructure support and systems integration. In 2009 it entered a joint venture with Carillion to provide Openreach support services for seven years. The framework was extended in 2017, and Telent later became solely responsible for delivery after Carillion collapsed. Transport infrastructure became another major area of activity. In 2013 Network Rail selected Telent to deliver a nationwide SCADA system replacing 16 legacy electrical-control systems, some dating from the 1950s. In 2017 Telent won a major contract for the next-generation National Roads Telecommunications Service, connecting control centres and thousands of roadside assets such as message signs, CCTV cameras and emergency telephones. The arrangement was subsequently extended. Ownership changed again in 2017 when Edmund Truell acquired Telent and its retirement-fund liabilities. In 2019 insurer Rothesay Life bought out the company’s pension scheme, while J.C. Flowers held a significant interest in the business. Leadership also changed after chief executive Mark Plato died in a motorcycle accident in September 2019. Frank McKay served temporarily before Jo Gretton became chief executive in July 2020. Telent expanded into newer communications technologies in the 2020s. It launched a private 5G network service in 2021 and acquired Harlequin Group, enhancing its professional services for mobile operators and its fibre-network planning capabilities. It continued to support railway, road, emergency-response and telecommunications infrastructure, including Coastguard radio sites, the West Coast Main Line and railway systems in Wales and western England. In 2025 Telent became part of M Group Services, an infrastructure-services business backed by CVC Capital Partners. The acquisition followed reported interest from several potential buyers and was completed for an undisclosed sum. Telent’s subsequent work has included a railway telecommunications renewal programme, a communications-infrastructure contract for HS2 with Hitachi Rail, and, according to the supplied reference material, a 2026 Royal Air Force agreement covering the operation and improvement of the SCIDA service at 244 locations. Telent remains an active specialist provider of mission-critical communications, network engineering and digital infrastructure services.
