Overview

Teleon was a Turkish television channel established on 27 January 1992 by Cem Uzan under Uzan Holding. It was created as part of the Uzan Group's strategy to maintain leadership in private television broadcasting, launching before the group's better-known Show TV. Test broadcasts began on 8 January 1992, supported by promotional spots featuring Müjdat Gezen and Cenk Koray with slogans such as "ON'u bekliyorum" and "ON'da buluşalım." The channel broadcast for approximately two and a half years in its first period, operating 24 hours a day and airing Hollywood films as well as late-night erotic films. Over time, however, its schedule became dominated by Star 1 reruns and, later, by a continuous on-screen band carrying the slogan "Ailenizin gazinosu Teleon." Between 1993 and 1994, Teleon shared a single frequency with the American music channel MTV and with Kral TV, Turkey's first domestic music channel, alternating broadcasts. The channel closed in 1994 and was replaced by Kral TV. Teleon returned on 22 July 1999 after the Uzan Group acquired the broadcasting rights to the Turkish First Football League. It relaunched as an encrypted football channel on the Kral TV frequency, with a football symbol added to the "On" logo. It broadcast the 1999–2000 season and the first half of the 2000–2001 season live. When the Uzan Group failed to meet its commitments, the broadcasting rights passed to Digiturk, owned by Çukurova Holding, in early 2001. Teleon then recovered its decoders from subscribers through legal action. After losing the league rights, the channel again lost its purpose and alternated broadcasts with Kral TV for about a year following a change-of-ownership tender. It ceased broadcasting on 30 January 2002 and was replaced by Star 2. Following the Savings Deposit Insurance Fund (TMSF) sale of Kral Media Group to Doğuş Group, the channel's broadcasting rights are now held by that holding. Teleon's programming included talk shows such as the Müjdat Gezen–Cenk Koray Show and "On'da On," sports coverage including the Turkish First Football League, UEFA Champions League, and Telegol, music and entertainment programming shared with Kral TV, and a range of domestic series. The channel is remembered as an early experiment in Turkish private television and as a vehicle for the Uzan Group's media ambitions.

History

Teleon was founded on 27 January 1992 by Cem Uzan under Uzan Holding, before the launch of Show TV on 1 March 1992. The Uzan Group acted to launch a new channel in order not to lose its leadership in private television broadcasting. Test broadcasts began on 8 January 1992. To generate interest, the channel aired unusual promotional spots featuring Müjdat Gezen and Cenk Koray with slogans such as "ON'u bekliyorum" and "ON'da buluşalım." In its first period, lasting about two and a half years, Teleon broadcast 24 hours a day and showed Hollywood films as well as erotic films after a certain hour at night. Eventually, however, it became a channel that continuously aired Star 1 reruns. Later, for days on end, it broadcast only a band with the slogan "Ailenizin gazinosu Teleon." Between 1993 and 1994, the channel began alternating broadcasts on a single frequency with the US-based music channel MTV and with Kral TV, Turkey's first domestic music channel founded in 1994. The channel closed in 1994 and was replaced by Kral TV. On 22 July 1999, after the Uzan Group purchased the broadcasting rights to the Turkish First Football League, Teleon returned on the Kral TV frequency as an encrypted football channel, with a football symbol added to the "On" logo. It broadcast the league live during the 1999–2000 season and the first half of the 2000–2001 season. When the Uzan Group failed to fulfill its commitments, the broadcasting rights passed to Digiturk, owned by Çukurova Holding, in early 2001. After this, the organization recovered decoders from its members through legal action. Having lost the First League broadcasting rights, Teleon again lost its raison d'être and, after a change-of-ownership tender, alternated broadcasts with Kral TV for a year. The channel ended its broadcasting life on 30 January 2002 and was replaced by Star 2. With the TMSF's sale of Kral Media Group to Doğuş Group, the channel's broadcasting rights are now held by that holding.
