Overview
Telesirio is a private local radio-television broadcaster headquartered at the industrial nucleus of Avezzano, in the Abruzzo region of Italy. The station was conceived in 1978 and officially launched on 1 May 1979 by a group of journalists and entrepreneurs from Avezzano and the Marsica area, led by its first publisher Ottaviano Gentile. Named after the star Sirius, Telesirio began by covering the Marsica territory, the Roveto Valley and the Carsoli area, and quickly became known for a new style of information and entertainment programming. Its flagship newscast, Telesirio Notizie, aired three daily editions, alongside sports segments, children's shows, quiz programs and special services. According to an ISTEL survey cited by the broadcaster, it became the most-watched station in the Province of L'Aquila. Over the years Telesirio expanded its reach by acquiring frequencies of other local television stations in the Province of L'Aquila, extending its coverage across the province and into parts of Molise and the Lazio region, including a limited period of broadcasting in Rome on channel 749. It joined the GRT television circuit, airing films, TV series, cartoons and programs such as Formula '81, alongside self-produced programming focused on local and regional news, culture and sport. Since 1998 Telesirio has been among the first web TVs in central Italy, streamed nationally and worldwide. It is the only local Abruzzo broadcaster with a teletext service, called Siriotext, also available online. A new headquarters in via Diesel at the Avezzano industrial nucleus was inaugurated on 20 December 2003, and in 2018 the station opened an office in the historic centre of L'Aquila at the Galleria Irti. Since 2015 it has also operated a web news service through its official website. Today Telesirio operates as a multimedia local brand, combining traditional television broadcasting with web TV streaming, an online news portal and social media presence. Its schedule includes self-produced programs, special services, columns, films and TV series, with a strong emphasis on local news for Abruzzo, the regional capital L'Aquila and the Marsica area. The station remains privately held and is a reference point for local information in its territory.
History
Telesirio was conceived in 1978 and officially launched on 1 May 1979 by a group of journalists and entrepreneurs from Abruzzo, led by its first publisher Ottaviano Gentile. The station was named after the star Sirius. It obtained its first frequency in the Avezzano and Marsica territory, and in 1979 a suitable headquarters with a television newsroom and studio was inaugurated in the centre of Avezzano, on corso della Libertà. The first editor-in-chief was Eliseo Palmieri, while Filippo Fabrizi served as programming director. The station expanded beyond the Marsica territory to cover the entire Province of L'Aquila by acquiring the frequencies of other local television stations, and also reached parts of Molise and the Lazio region, including a limited period of broadcasting in Rome on channel 749. Telesirio joined the GRT television circuit, airing films, TV series, cartoons and programs such as Formula '81, alongside self-produced programming focused on local and regional news, culture and sport.
