Overview
Tenable, Inc. is an American cybersecurity company headquartered in Columbia, Maryland. It was founded in 2002 by Ron Gula, Jack Huffard and Renaud Deraison, building on Deraison's open-source Nessus vulnerability scanner, which first appeared in the late 1990s and became one of the most widely deployed vulnerability-assessment tools in the world. Tenable commercialized Nessus and expanded it into a broader portfolio of security products. The company's core offering is the Tenable One Exposure Management Platform, which combines vulnerability management, attack surface management, cloud security, identity exposure, operational technology (OT) security and web application scanning. Flagship products include Tenable Vulnerability Management (formerly Tenable.io), Tenable Security Center, Tenable Cloud Security, Tenable OT Security, Tenable Identity Exposure, Tenable Web App Scanning and the Nessus scanner family. Tenable serves enterprises, government agencies and critical-infrastructure operators across the world, with a customer base spanning many thousands of organizations. Tenable is listed on the NASDAQ under the ticker TENB, having completed its initial public offering in 2018. It is a pure-play exposure-management vendor and positions itself around the idea that organizations should shift from reactive vulnerability scanning to proactive, unified exposure management across IT, cloud and OT environments. The company has grown both organically and through acquisitions, including the purchase of Bit Discovery (attack surface management) and Ermetic (cloud infrastructure security). Tenable's brand is closely tied to the Nessus name, which remains a de facto standard in vulnerability scanning and is used by security professionals worldwide. The company invests heavily in research through Tenable Research, which publishes vulnerability disclosures and threat intelligence, and it maintains a strong presence in the security community.
History
Tenable's history begins with Nessus. In the late 1990s, French security researcher Renaud Deraison created Nessus, an open-source remote vulnerability scanner that quickly became one of the most popular tools for security auditing. In 2002, Deraison, Ron Gula and Jack Huffard founded Tenable Network Security (later Tenable, Inc.) to commercialize Nessus and build enterprise-grade vulnerability management products around it. Through the 2000s Tenable grew as a vulnerability-management specialist, adding passive network monitoring, compliance auditing and configuration assessment. Its products, notably Security Center and the Nessus scanner, became standard tools in enterprise and government security programs. Tenable also built a strong research practice, disclosing vulnerabilities and publishing threat intelligence. In the 2010s Tenable expanded into cloud and container security, and in 2018 the company completed an initial public offering on NASDAQ under the ticker TENB. The IPO marked Tenable's transition from a privately held security vendor to a publicly traded pure-play exposure-management company. After going public, Tenable broadened its platform through acquisitions and product development. It acquired Bit Discovery, an attack surface management company, and Ermetic, a cloud infrastructure security provider, extending its coverage into external attack surface and cloud entitlement risk. The company consolidated its portfolio under the Tenable One Exposure Management Platform, which unifies vulnerability management, attack surface management, cloud security, identity exposure, OT security and web application scanning. Tenable has also been active in the operational technology space, helping industrial and critical-infrastructure customers secure OT environments, and it continues to invest in Tenable Research, which publishes vulnerability disclosures and threat intelligence for the security community. Today Tenable is one of the best-known names in vulnerability and exposure management, with Nessus remaining a de facto standard among security practitioners.
