Overview
Thomastik-Infeld is based in Vienna and has been developing and producing high-performance music strings since 1919. The company was founded by Ing. Otto Infeld and Dr. Franz Thomastik. It produces strings for bowed, plucked and world music instruments, including orchestral strings, guitar strings and folk strings.
History
Thomastik-Infeld was founded in Vienna in 1919 by Ing. Otto Infeld and Dr. Franz Thomastik. By 1927 the Vienna-based string forge was already developing and producing strings for violin, viola, cello and bass. Although the workshops were completely destroyed in World War Two, the founders held onto their enthusiasm and innovative spirit; five years after the war ended, Thomastik-Infeld's steel rope core string reached the music market, followed by strings for mandolin, mandola and jazz guitar. By 1958 the company had 20 employees, and two years later Spirocore, the flexible spiral rope core string, impressed musicians worldwide. In 1970, one year after Apollo 11 landed on the moon, the company introduced the Dominant synthetic core strings.
