Overview
Togga (legally TOGGA, spol. s r.o.) is a Czech publishing house (vydavatelství a nakladatelství) whose catalogue concentrates on books in musicology and the humanities. It was founded in May 1997, initially as an advertising and marketing agency, and only later shifted its focus to the printing and production of book titles. The company is based in the Czech Republic and sells its titles primarily on the Czech market through its own online shop at togga.cz. The publisher's list spans musicology, philosophy, religion, poetry and memoir. Notable titles include Pavel Kurfürst's "Hudební nástroje" (Musical Instruments, 2002), described as one of the best books on the structure and history of musical instruments and a recipient of the Rector's Award of Masaryk University in Brno; Miloš Hons's "Hudba zvaná symfonie" (Music Called Symphony, 2005); "Judaismus pro začátečníky" (Judaism for Beginners, 2003) by Charles Szlakmann, published with the Bejt elend afternoon Jewish school; and Radovan Lovčí's biography "Alice Garrigue Masaryková: život ve stínu slavného otce" (2007), issued with the Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague. In 2016 Togga expanded its output with the Fontes Musicae Bohemiae series, devoted to critical editions of sources of older Czech music; its first title was the Concerto in G by the Czech Baroque composer Antonín Reichenauer. The house also publishes the annual "Ročenka pro filosofii a fenomenologický výzkum" (Yearbook for Philosophy and Phenomenological Research), which brings together studies and experimental texts. Togga operates as a private Czech limited liability company and remains active, offering its books directly to readers through its website, where new titles, tips and discounted stock are regularly promoted.
History
Togga was founded in May 1997, originally as an advertising and marketing agency. Only later did the company turn its attention to the printing and production of books, becoming a publishing house (vydavatelství a nakladatelství) focused above all on musicology and the humanities. Among the titles that built its reputation is Pavel Kurfürst's "Hudební nástroje" (Musical Instruments), published in Prague in 2002 and described as one of the best books on the structure and history of musical instruments; it received, among other distinctions, the Rector's Award of Masaryk University in Brno for a significant creative achievement. In 2003 the house published "Judaismus pro začátečníky" (Judaism for Beginners), a text with illustrations by Charles Szlakmann translated by Hana Holubkovová, issued in cooperation with the Bejt elend afternoon Jewish school in Prague. Miloš Hons's "Hudba zvaná symfonie" (Music Called Symphony), on the structure of the symphony, followed in Prague in 2005. In 2007 Togga issued Radovan Lovčí's biography "Alice Garrigue Masaryková: život ve stínu slavného otce", on the life of Alice Masaryková (1879–1966), the eldest daughter of the first Czechoslovak president, published by the Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague in association with the Togga publishing house. In 2016 the publisher broadened its production with the Fontes Musicae Bohemiae series, dedicated to critical editions of sources of older Czech music. The first title in the series was the Concerto in G by the Czech Baroque composer Antonín Reichenauer (ISBN 978-80-7476-108-9). The house also publishes the annual "Ročenka pro filosofii a fenomenologický výzkum" (Yearbook for Philosophy and Phenomenological Research), which regularly brings together studies and experimental texts. Togga continues to operate as a private Czech limited liability company, selling its books through its own online shop, where it promotes new titles, staff tips and discounted stock.
