History
According to the company's official history, Towa Shoji Goshi Kaisha was founded in October 1928 by Nagamasa Kawakita as a pioneer of foreign-film import and distribution in Japan. Kashiko Takeuchi (later Kawakita), who joined shortly after the founding and later married Kawakita, worked with him; initially the company imported and released mainly outstanding works from European countries, and also introduced Japanese films abroad and produced international co-productions. It was renamed Towa Eiga Co., Ltd. in 1951, reorganized as Towa Co., Ltd. in 1960, and renamed Toho-Towa Co., Ltd. in 1975. Over that period it expanded its import sources to include American and Hong Kong films, and in recent years it has centered on entrusted distribution in Japan of American Universal works.
