Overview

Tolgee is a Czech software company based in Brno that develops an open-source localization and translation management platform. The platform enables translating texts directly within the application interface and combines human translators with machine and AI translation, including integration with external translation engines. It can be run both in the cloud and on-premises (self-hosting). The company was founded in 2021 by Jan Čižmár (founder and CEO), Markéta Čižmár (co-founder and COO), and Štěpán Granát. Jan Čižmár began working on the tool in late 2019 as part of his master's thesis, inspired by his previous job where missing translations were among the most common software errors. This led to the idea of allowing text edits directly in the app by clicking on them. Development was supported by the CzechInvest Technological Incubation program, under which a context-aware AI translator was created. The company also participated in CzechInvest's internationalization program funded by the European Union from the National Recovery Plan. Tolgee representatives spoke at open-source conferences OpenAlt (2023) and DevConf.CZ (2025), and the company attended developer conferences such as React Summit, Open Source Summit Europe, WeAreDevelopers World Congress, and Droidcon. In 2024, the company received a seed investment of 500,000 euros from the Flying Founders fund. This was the fund's very first investment, focusing on sustainably growing SaaS startups as an alternative to traditional venture capital. According to the investor, the company had more than a hundred clients at the time of entry. Tolgee was also included in the CC25 list of watched startups by CzechCrunch. Tolgee works with translation context, so translators and machine translation can see where and how text appears in the application. Through SDKs and browser extensions, it offers an in-context feature—the ability to edit translations directly in the running application's interface. This can be used even by people without technical knowledge. Finished translations can be reviewed within the team or by professional translators, alongside automatic quality checks. The platform also includes its own context-aware AI translator. For developers, Tolgee provides SDKs for common JavaScript frameworks such as React, Angular, and Vue.js, a command-line tool (CLI), a REST API for automation, and an MCP server for connecting with AI tools. Tolgee is available as a cloud service (SaaS) and for self-hosting. The source code is available as open source on GitHub, and distribution also takes place via Docker Hub and npm.
