Overview
Torisumi Co., Ltd. (トリスミ集成材株式会社) is a Japanese manufacturer of structural glued laminated timber (glulam) headquartered in Gojo, Nara Prefecture. The company traces its origins to 1946, when Tomisuke Kaimoto founded Kaimoto Shoten in the village of Torisumi, Kurotaki, Nara, producing decorative-faced columns from cedar. It was incorporated in 1965 as Torishumi Meiboku Kogyosho Co., Ltd., and in 1976, after merging with Torisumi Tokushu Shuseizai, adopted the name Torisumi Shuseizai Co., Ltd. Torisumi was one of the earliest glulam manufacturers in Japan and grew into a leading producer in Nara Prefecture, using mainly North American imported lumber to make glulam for wooden houses and also undertaking the construction of wooden buildings. The company operates an integrated business spanning design, development, manufacturing, processing, delivery, and construction. Its Gojo plant, completed in 1992, began conventional pre-cut production, and subsequent lines for large-section and small-to-medium-section structural glulam were added in 1993 and 2001. Torisumi obtained ISO 9001 quality certification in 1999 and ISO 14001 environmental certification in 2005. It has supplied glulam for numerous wooden buildings, bridges, and monuments across Japan, including the Kyoto City Nishikyo Ward General Government Building, KYOTO TACHIBANA Stadium, Nara Convention Center, and the National Day Hall at Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai. After a period of financial difficulty in the 2010s, the original company transferred its business to a new entity sponsored by Murachi Sogo Mokuzai in 2017. The new Torisumi Co., Ltd. was established on June 12, 2017, and began operations on September 1, 2017, as a wholly owned subsidiary of Murachi Sogo Mokuzai. The old company was renamed TS商事株式会社 (TS Shoji Co., Ltd.) and later liquidated. Since March 2021, Torisumi has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Murachi Group Co., Ltd. under a holding company structure. As of the fiscal year ended March 2024, the company reported annual sales of 4.3 billion yen and employed 80 people.
History
Torisumi's history begins in 1946, when Tomisuke Kaimoto founded Kaimoto Shoten in the village of Torisumi, Kurotaki, Nara Prefecture, as a producer of decorative-faced columns made from cedar. The area, historically known as Yamato Torisu Village, had been settled since ancient times. In 1965, the business was reorganized as Torishumi Meiboku Kogyosho Co., Ltd. In 1968, Torisumi Tokushu Shuseizai Co., Ltd. was established in Mihara, Osaka. The two companies merged in 1976, forming Torisumi Shuseizai Co., Ltd. At that time, the term 'glulam' was not yet standardized in Japan; terms such as 'laminated wood' and 'composite columns' were used until the Japan Glued Laminated Timber Industry Association was established in 1963. Torisumi was one of the first companies in Japan to manufacture glulam. It grew into a leading glulam manufacturer in Nara Prefecture, using mainly North American imported lumber to produce glulam for wooden houses and also undertaking the construction of wooden buildings. In January 1992, the company completed a new factory in the Techno Park Nara industrial park in Gojo, Nara, and began conventional pre-cut production. In May 1993, a production line for large-section structural glulam was completed, followed by a line for small-to-medium-section structural glulam in May 2001. The company obtained ISO 9001 certification in May 1999 and ISO 14001 certification in September 2005. In February 2004, Torisumi Jutaku Shizai Co., Ltd. was established as a subsidiary. At its peak, Torisumi recorded sales of 10.21 billion yen in the fiscal year ended December 1996. However, the decline in housing starts due to an aging population and other factors led to a prolonged slump. The debt from the 1992 factory investment became a heavy burden, and by the fiscal year ended March 2016, sales had fallen to 4.87 billion yen with an operating loss of about 380 million yen. The company sought revitalization through the Nara Prefecture Small and Medium Enterprise Revitalization Support Council, but determined that independent reconstruction was difficult. On May 30, 2017, the company requested support from the Regional Economy Vitalization Corporation of Japan (REVIC) together with its main bank, Nanto Bank, the Shoko Chukin Bank, and sponsor Murachi Sogo Mokuzai. Support was approved the same day. Murachi Sogo Mokuzai established Torisumi Shuseizai Spin-off Preparation Co., Ltd. on June 12, 2017, as a new company to take over the old company's business. On September 1, 2017, the new company acquired all business operations from the old company and changed its name to Torisumi Shuseizai Co., Ltd. (new company). The president of Murachi Sogo Mokuzai concurrently served as president of the new company. The old company was renamed TS Shoji Co., Ltd. on the same day. TS Shoji resolved to dissolve on May 31, 2018, and moved its head office to Habikino, Osaka. On October 10, 2018, it received a special liquidation order from the Osaka District Court, with liabilities of approximately 4.28 billion yen. TS Shoji's corporate existence was extinguished on January 9, 2019. The new Torisumi continued operations under the Murachi group. On March 6, 2021, as part of a transition to a holding company structure, it became a wholly owned subsidiary of Murachi Group Co., Ltd. As of the fiscal year ended March 2024, the company reported annual sales of 4.3 billion yen and employed 80 people. It remains active in manufacturing and selling glulam, pre-cut timber, and providing design and construction services for wooden buildings.
