Overview

Trend Micro is an American-Japanese cybersecurity software company headquartered in Tokyo. Founded in Los Angeles in 1988 by Steve Chang, Jenny Chang, and Eva Chen, the company developed from an early focus on antivirus software into a broad security provider serving enterprises, governments, small businesses, and consumers. Its products and services cover endpoint protection, email and collaboration security, network defense, cloud and container security, data protection, threat intelligence, security operations, and connected-device security. The company moved its headquarters to Taipei shortly after its founding and established a substantial Japanese presence after taking over a Japanese software business in 1992. Japan subsequently became the company’s principal corporate base, and Trend Micro was listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 1998. It also traded American depositary shares on NASDAQ before delisting those securities in 2007. Trend Micro expanded internationally through technology partnerships and acquisitions, including relationships with Intel and Novell in the 1990s and later purchases involving antispyware, antispam, encryption, intrusion prevention, cloud security, network security, and vulnerability-management capabilities. Its enterprise portfolio has included Trend Micro Apex One for endpoint security, Deep Security for server and workload protection, Cloud App Security for cloud applications and collaboration platforms, and Vision One for extended detection and response and broader risk visibility. The company also operates research and threat-intelligence functions that support automated detection of malware, phishing, ransomware, vulnerabilities, and other cyber threats. Its cloud and virtualization offerings have supported environments associated with VMware, Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud. Trend Micro has pursued expansion beyond traditional antivirus through acquisitions such as TippingPoint, Third Brigade, Broadweb, Cloud Conformity, and IMMUNIO. It has also formed or announced partnerships in industrial security, connected vehicles, telecommunications, law-enforcement cooperation, application security, and artificial intelligence. In addition to commercial products, the company has shared threat intelligence with INTERPOL and Japan’s National center of Incident readiness and Strategy for Cybersecurity. The brand has faced criticism over privacy practices in several consumer Mac applications. In 2018, researchers reported that certain applications collected browser-history and related information and transmitted it for analysis; Apple removed the affected products from its Mac App Store, and Trend Micro acknowledged the data collection and apologized. Despite this controversy, Trend Micro remains an active publicly listed cybersecurity vendor with globally distributed research, development, sales, and support operations.

History

Trend Micro was founded in 1988 in Los Angeles by Steve Chang, Jenny Chang, and Eva Chen. Initial funding came from the sale of a copy-protection dongle developed by Chang. The founders soon moved the company’s headquarters to Taipei, while building a business around computer-virus protection. In 1992, Trend Micro took over a Japanese software company, created Trend Micro Devices, and established Tokyo as its principal headquarters. During the 1990s, the company expanded through licensing and distribution relationships. An agreement with Intel allowed Trend Micro to develop a local-area-network antivirus product sold in some markets under Intel’s LANDesk brand. Novell later bundled the product with its network operating system. Trend Micro subsequently marketed ServerProtect under its own name alongside Intel’s offering. These arrangements helped the company move from a small antivirus developer toward an international enterprise-security vendor. Trend Micro listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 1998 and began trading American depositary shares on NASDAQ in 1999. In 2004, Steve Chang separated the chief executive and chair roles. Eva Chen, previously the company’s chief technology officer, became CEO in January 2005, while Chang retained the chairmanship. The company broadened its capabilities through acquisitions in the 2000s. InterMute added antispyware technology, Kelkea added antispam and IP-filtering assets, HijackThis strengthened malware-diagnostic tools, and Provilla contributed data-loss-prevention technology. Identum brought identity-based email encryption, while Third Brigade added host-based intrusion prevention and firewall capabilities. Trend Micro also acquired humyo’s cloud-storage business and Mobile Armor’s disk, file, folder, and removable-media encryption technology. During the early 2010s, Trend Micro continued to build a layered security platform. AffirmTrust added SSL certificate capabilities, and Broadweb contributed deep-packet inspection technology. The company’s research and support organization, TrendLabs, became an important source of malware analysis and threat intelligence. In 2013, Trend Micro consolidated US operations in Irving, Texas. In 2014, it expanded cooperation with INTERPOL and enhanced Cloud App Security to address threats affecting Microsoft Office 365. The 2015 purchase of TippingPoint from HP strengthened network security and added the Zero Day Initiative, a vulnerability-research and bug-bounty program. Trend Micro later invested in next-generation technology through a venture fund and Trend Forward Capital. Its acquisition of IMMUNIO in 2017 added application-vulnerability detection and container-image scanning, while the 2019 acquisition of Cloud Conformity expanded cloud security posture management. Partnerships with Panasonic, Luxoft, Snyk, Moxa, Fujitsu, INTERPOL, NISC, and others extended the company’s reach into vehicles, open-source software, industrial systems, public-sector security, and connected infrastructure. Trend Micro remains an active global cybersecurity company. Its portfolio has evolved from conventional antivirus toward cloud-managed, behavior-based, workload, application, network, and extended-detection platforms. The company continues to combine commercial security products with threat research, vulnerability disclosure, industry partnerships, and cooperation with law-enforcement and national cybersecurity organizations.
