History
Trilogy International Partners was founded in 2005 by John W. Stanton and several associates. The founders had previously been involved in managing Western Wireless, an American wireless telecommunications operator that merged with Alltel in 2005. Trilogy adopted an international investment model, concentrating on ownership and management interests in wireless businesses outside the United States. The company expanded its portfolio through telecommunications operations in the Caribbean, Latin America and the Pacific. In Haiti, Trilogy owned Comcel Haiti, which it sold to Digicel Group in March 2012. In the Dominican Republic, its operation Trilogy Dominicana was sold to Telemicro Group in 2015. The Dominican business later operated under the Viva name. These disposals demonstrated the company's practice of recycling capital from established or strategically less central markets. Trilogy's most important long-term assets became 2degrees in New Zealand and Nuevatel in Bolivia. Trilogy held 51% of 2degrees, alongside other investors including Tesbrit BV. 2degrees was described as New Zealand's third-largest mobile provider in 2017, with roughly 23% of the mobile market. In addition to mobile services, it offered fixed-line telephone and broadband products. Trilogy held 72% of Nuevatel, with the remaining 28% owned by the Bolivian telephone cooperative COMTECO. Nuevatel was described as Bolivia's third-largest mobile operator in 2017, with approximately 24% market share, and operated under the Viva brand. In 2017, Trilogy entered the public markets through a takeover by a company listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange. The transaction raised approximately $270 million and resulted in Trilogy being listed on the TSX. The listing provided access to public capital while the company continued to operate as an international telecommunications holding and investment business. Both major operating companies were sold in 2022. Trilogy anticipated receiving a nominal amount for Nuevatel, while the sale of its majority stake in 2degrees was expected to produce proceeds of approximately NZD 930 million. Following these transactions, the company's operating portfolio was substantially reduced. In March 2024, SG Enterprises II, LLC was reported to have acquired 80.1% of Trilogy for approximately $5 million. The transaction took the company private and ended its Toronto Stock Exchange listing. Available reference material does not clearly establish the company's post-transaction operating status or the identity of any continuing management team.
