Overview

Trovarobato (sometimes styled La Trovarobato or La Famosa Etichetta Trovarobato) is an Italian independent record label and cultural association founded in 2004 and based in Bologna. It grew out of the Magazzeno, a self-managed creative space in a Porta Mascarella workshop block that served as the operational base for the band Mariposa. Trovarobato was originally conceived to self-manage that group's concert and recording activity, then quickly opened its catalogue to musicians orbiting the same scene, becoming a small independent label and taking the legal form of a cultural association. The label's early releases carried the Mariposa signature (Pròfitti Now!, Suzuki Bazuki) but the catalogue soon widened to include Transgender, Addamanera and Adriano Modica. From 2008 activity intensified with MUSICAPERBAMBINI, Alessandro Grazian, Eterea Postbong Band and Dino Fumaretto. The 2010 release of La Macarena Su Roma, the debut of IOSONOUNCANE, was a defining moment; the label went on to publish his single Le sirene di luglio (2012) and the decade-defining album DIE (2015). Alongside skewed Italian songwriting, Trovarobato has released English-language records by Samuel Katarro/King Of The Opera, Blue Willa, honeybird & the birdies and C+C=Maxigross. Trovarobato has also been active in radio and streaming production, notably the Magazzeno Bis talk-show/concert series broadcast in 2005–2006 across a network of 30 stations in Italy, Belgium, Luxembourg and Slovenia, repeated in 2008–2009 with 23 stations. It created the Parade sub-label for "other" music in 2010 and the Paranormal Discography series to give voice to dissolved bands, and launched a netlabel activity with the Trovarobato Songswap compilation. It curated the Indipendulo festival within the Meeting delle Etichette Indipendenti in Faenza from 2006, and won best Italian label of the year at that meeting in 2009 and the Premio Artigianato della canzone at the Premio Bindi in 2012. In the second half of the 2010s the label released artists such as Persian Pelican, K-Conjog, La Maison and Tobjah, and in 2018 Camillas' Discoteca Rock in collaboration with Trovarobato. In 2019 came Coma (Dino Fumaretto's last album of new material), Deserto by C+C=Maxigross and Alla Fiera della Fine by MUSICAPERBAMBINI, with Mariposa returning shortly before the pandemic. The label remains active, with recent releases including IOSONOUNCANE's Berlinguer – La Grande Ambizione (2024), Lirica Ucraina (2025) and I Diari Di Mio Padre (2025), plus titles by AKA5HA, Banadisa, Emma Grace, Gaia Banfi, Hate Moss, So Beast and Nuhara.

History

Trovarobato was founded in 2004 in Bologna, in a Porta Mascarella workshop block that housed the Magazzeno — described by the label as the lair of Mariposa, resembling a party section, an operations centre and a laboratory for every project radiating from there. Trovarobato was conceived as a brand to self-manage the life of the group, and was soon transformed into a common home for the musicians gravitating around that place. The first productions were signed by Mariposa (Pròfitti Now!, Suzuki Bazuki), but the catalogue opened immediately to Transgender, Addamanera and Adriano Modica. From 2008 activity intensified, with MUSICAPERBAMBINI, Alessandro Grazian, Eterea Postbong Band and Dino Fumaretto joining. In 2010 came what the label calls the explosion: La Macarena Su Roma, the debut of IOSONOUNCANE. Trovarobato continued to follow skewed paths in Italian song while also publishing English-language records by Samuel Katarro/King Of The Opera, Blue Willa, honeybird & the birdies and C+C=Maxigross. It opened the contemporary music series Parade and invented Paranormal Discography to give voice back to already dissolved bands. In 2015 came DIE by IOSONOUNCANE, described as the watershed of the decade, a record that marked and redefined things. In the second half of the 2010s many artists released under the label, including Persian Pelican, K-Conjog, La Maison and Tobjah. In 2018 the unforgettable Camillas also released their Discoteca Rock in collaboration with Trovarobato. In 2019 came Coma, Dino Fumaretto's last album of new material, Deserto by C+C=Maxigross and Alla Fiera della Fine by MUSICAPERBAMBINI. Shortly before the pandemic, Mariposa also returned. Beyond records, Trovarobato has been a cultural association with a strong radio and streaming practice. It produced Magazzeno Bis, a talk-show/concert recorded in its own studios and broadcast in 2005–2006 through a radio network it coordinated, comprising 30 stations in Italy, Belgium, Luxembourg and Slovenia; a second season, Magazzeno bis 2008, followed in collaboration with Locomotiv Club, Città del Capo Radio Metropolitana and Audioglobe. It also produced radiodramas, short operas, talk shows and, with the release of Eterea Post Bong Band's EPYKS 1.0, streaming video broadcasts. From 2006 it curated Indipendulo, a festival within the Meeting delle Etichette Indipendenti in Faenza, whose stage hosted Beatrice Antolini, Amore, Calibro 35, Eterea Post Bong Band, Camillas, Le luci della centrale elettrica and others. In 2009 it won best Italian label of the year at the Meeting delle Etichette Indipendenti. In 2010 it created the sub-label Parade, dedicated to "other" musics, whose first release was Der Maurer vol.1 by Enrico Gabrielli; in December of the same year it presented its new netlabel activity with the compilation Trovarobato Songswap, previewed on four music blogs and streamed exclusively on the website of xL magazine. In July 2012 it received the Premio Artigianato della canzone during the Premio Bindi. Trovarobato is the record label of IOSONOUNCANE, with whom it published La macarena su Roma in 2010, the single Le sirene di luglio in 2012 and DIE in 2015, and it is the label under which all of Dino Fumaretto's studio albums have been released.
