Overview

Turista is a Czech magazine published by the Klub českých turistů (Czech Tourist Club, KČT), one of the oldest continuously associated periodicals in Czech outdoor and travel culture. It was founded under the name Časopis Turistů on 4 February 1889, only months after the club itself was established in 1888, and its stated purpose was to promote tourism, introduce readers to the natural, historical and cultural attractions of Czechia, and keep KČT members informed about club life. In its modern form Turista is a 76-page full-colour magazine issued ten times a year. It offers tips for trips on foot, by bicycle, on cross-country skis or by boat, and covers the history and present of Czech tourism along with natural, cultural and historical curiosities such as lookout towers, educational trails, monuments and museums. Each issue carries a themed 12-page block profiling one of the regions of Czechia. The magazine also publishes interviews with figures from tourism and travel, information on new outdoor equipment, tourist literature and traveller services, and a section titled "Ze života KČT" (From the Life of the KČT) reporting on the club and its branches. The magazine is sold on newsstands and by subscription, with discounts for KČT members. Its owner is the Klub českých turistů, while production has been handled by the company Lidé&Hory since 2017. The editor-in-chief is Marcela Titzlová. Over its long history Turista has changed names and publishers several times, reflecting the political upheavals of the 20th century, and its editorial team has won several Czech journalism awards for its coverage of monuments and heritage.

History

The magazine was conceived together with the Klub českých turistů, which was founded in 1888. Its first issue appeared on 4 February 1889 under the title Časopis Turistů. The initiator and first editor was Vilém Kurz, assisted by Ferdinand Tallowitz and Ladislav Čech. It was initially printed by the Šimáček brothers' press with a print run of 800 copies, later reduced to 600. The very first contribution was a proclamation, "Naše snahy" (Our Endeavours), setting out the goals of the newly founded Czech Tourist Club and its magazine. From 1889 the magazine appeared as a monthly. In 1896 it was published as a fortnightly for the first four months before reverting to monthly frequency. Its period of greatest prestige is considered to be the First Republic era, when Jiří Stanislav Guth-Jarkovský was editor (1897–1926). In 1922 the publication was split into Časopis Turistů, edited by Guth-Jarkovský, and "Časopis Turistů-Věštník KČST", edited by J. Kropáček; from 1925 only Časopis Turistů was issued again. In 1934 the format changed from octavo to quarto. Publication was suspended between 1944 and 1945, and the first 1945 issue appeared only after the end of the Second World War. In 1948 the Klub českých turistů had to cease its activities, including its club periodical. From 1949 a monthly called Turistika – Horolezectví was published by the Česká obec sokolská until 1952. In 1953 the State Committee for Physical Education and Sport took over publication. The magazine then changed its name several times: Turistika (1955–1958), Turistika – Horolezectví (1959–1961), Turista (1962–1969), Turista – Magazín na cestu (1969–1970), Turista – Měsíčník na cestu (1971–1980) and Turista na cestu (1981–1984). It has carried its present name, Turista, without a subtitle, since 1985. From 1962 the publisher was the Czechoslovak Union of Physical Education and its producer was the Sports and Tourist Publishing House in Prague. After the Velvet Revolution the Klub českých turistů again became the publisher. From 1995 the magazine was produced by the company Litera Plzeň. In 2016 that cooperation ended when the Klub českých turistů gave notice, and from 2017 the new producer became the company Lidé&Hory. Since the end of 2023 the publisher is again the Klub českých turistů. Over its long history the magazine has received several recognitions. Its editorial team won the "Prix non pereant – Památky potřebují publicitu" award for 2005, given by the Syndicate of Czech Journalists and the Senate Committee for Education, Science, Culture, Human Rights and Petitions within the "Media to the Aid of Monuments" competition. The editorial team took first prize in the journalism category for 2009 in the same competition, judged by the Syndicate of Czech Journalists and the Pro Bohemia association; correspondent Roman Hartl was also awarded third place for a series on little-known monuments of the Rakovník, Křivoklát and Louny regions. In 2012 staff author Jakub Hloušek won second place in the "Media to the Aid of Monuments" journalism competition for a series on little-known heritage sites.
