Overview

Turning Point™ is an Irish organisation founded in 1986 by Kay Conroy and Mary Paula Walsh. It was established to address a gap in psychological support for individuals facing cancer, other life-threatening illnesses, and bereavement. Over time, it expanded to offer general psychotherapy services and group workshops, often facilitated by internationally renowned experts. In 2001, the founders established Turning Point™ Institute (TPI), a dedicated education and training centre for integrative counselling and psychotherapy. TPI is recognised nationally by all major Irish psychotherapy accreditation bodies (IAHIP, ICP, IACP) and internationally by the European Association of Psychotherapy (EAP) as a European Accredited Psychotherapy Training Institute (EAPTI). The institute offers a range of programmes, including an online Foundation Course in Counselling and Psychotherapy and a flagship MSc in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy, validated and awarded by University College Cork (UCC). TPI is known for its integrative, person-centred approach, putting the individual and their needs first. It continues to provide clinical services and training, contributing to psychotherapeutic studies, professional training, research, and supervision. The organisation is based in Dublin, Ireland, and operates primarily in Ireland and Europe.

History

Turning Point™ was co-founded by Kay Conroy and Mary Paula Walsh in 1986. The organisation was established to fill a perceived gap in psychological supports and services for those experiencing cancer, other life-threatening illnesses, and/or bereavement. In response to demand, Turning Point™ expanded to offer general psychotherapy services and group workshops, many of which were facilitated by internationally renowned experts in their field. As the organisation grew and flourished, and its reputation as a pioneer in its field spread, the founders turned their considerable energies and entrepreneurial vision to the development of new services and programmes. In 2001, Turning Point™ Institute (TPI) was established with the aim of developing psychotherapeutic training courses that set a benchmark of excellence in educational training, clinical practice, research and supervision, commensurate with similar internationally acclaimed institutions of psychotherapy. It was one of the first organisations in Ireland to offer humanistic and integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy services, which it continues to provide today. TPI is recognised nationally by all of the Irish Psychotherapy Accreditation Bodies (IAHIP, ICP, IACP) as well as internationally by the European Association of Psychotherapy (EAP) as a European Accredited Psychotherapy Training Institute (EAPTI). The institute offers a range of programmes, including an online Foundation Course in Counselling and Psychotherapy and a flagship MSc in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy, validated and awarded by University College Cork (UCC). The MSc programme is embedded within a Humanistic framework and includes experiential training, clinical practice, and supervision. TPI continues to be a welcoming, inclusive and diverse institute of psychotherapeutic training, encouraging students from a range of backgrounds.
