Overview
TV Noe ("Televize dobrých zpráv", or "Television of Good News") is the only non-commercial television broadcaster in the Czech Republic and the only Czech channel that devotes a large part of its schedule to Christian viewers, while also offering non-confessional educational programmes on history and natural sciences (notably astronomy and biology) and fairy tales for children. It began broadcasting in spring 2006 and is headquartered in Ostrava, in a former Redemptorist monastery near the Church of St. Wenceslas. The station is headed by one of its founders, the priest and Salesian Leoš Ryška. TV Noe positions itself as opinion- and religiously tolerant, apolitical and ethically minded. Its stated mission is to spread positive values such as general tolerance among people and to broaden spiritual and cultural horizons. Programming is family-oriented and built on traditional Christian values, offering spiritual depth and a healthy lifestyle while deliberately limiting depictions of violence and immorality. The channel aims to reach a broad spectrum of viewers of all generations and social groups, from the middle class to socially disadvantaged or disabled citizens and national minorities, and gives significant space to non-profit organisations. It produces and broadcasts its own recordings as well as live concert and theatre performances, and popularises findings from science, medicine and other fields. TV Noe cooperates with Dětská televize (Children's Television), which receives a half-hour weekly block. The station distributes its signal via the Astra 3B satellite (23.5° East), the DVB-T2 multiplex 23, the internet, its own mobile app, and cable networks in many cities in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The broadcast licence is held by Telepace s.r.o. Since 2023 it has also operated the NOE+ channel, showing older and new television programmes. In 2018 the station received the Celestýn Opitz Award from the Order of Merciful Brothers for its exemplary care for the sick and needy. TV Noe's schedule includes regular news programmes: news from the Vatican, news from the Holy Land, and its own "Noeviny", plus special news coverage of major Christian events such as the National Pilgrimage to Velehrad, the National Youth Meeting in Olomouc, the National St. Wenceslas Pilgrimage in Stará Boleslav, and World Youth Days, as well as broadcasts and reports from other public cultural events. It airs several magazines produced in-house or by other suppliers. Since 2019 it has included "Živě s Noe" (Live with Noe), supplemented once a month by "Noemova pošta" (Noah's Mail) on the first Friday of each month. Regular nature programmes include Outdoor Films, featuring topics such as the first ski descent of K2 and the traveller Jan Eskymo Welzl, as well as Jiří Kráčalík's series "V pohorách po horách". These are complemented by live broadcasts of cultural events (Strážnice, Terchová, Mohelnice, Vřesová studánka, Myjava, Hostýn, Radhošť, Rožnov pod Radhoštěm, Smetanova Litomyšl and others). Music programmes include "Jak potkávat svět" with Jiří Pavlica and guests, and "Cesta k andělům" with Otakar Maria Schmidt. Long-running programmes include "Noční univerzita" (Night University) with Marek Orko Vácha, Ladislav Heryán and others, "Biblická studna" (Biblical Well) with Petr Vaďura, and "Dům ze skla" (House of Glass) with Tomáš Halík, Pavel Fischer and others. Programmes in Latin and Italian are interpreted live. The station also offers Štefan Hríb's "Pod lampou". "Přejeme si" (We Wish) airs regularly before noon and before 8 p.m. from the Ostrava or Prague studio. Since 2016 the Prague Don Bosco studio has produced the classical philosophy programme "Na druhý pohled" (On Second Look) with Marek Orko Vácha and Karel Martin Satoria, supplemented by interactive viewer input. In September 2021 a new discussion programme with well-known personalities, "Dokořán", moderated by P.
History
TV Noe was founded in the early 2000s and began broadcasting in spring 2006. It was established as a non-commercial, Christian-oriented television station with the aim of being a "television of good news" for all. One of its founders, the priest and Salesian Leoš Ryška, became its director. The station is headquartered in Ostrava, in a former Redemptorist monastery near the Church of St. Wenceslas. The monastery, which had housed Ostrava's first cinema during the First Republic, was taken from the order under "Action K" in 1950 and gradually fell into disrepair. After a court process it was returned to the Redemptorists and donated to TV Noe, which reconstructed the building. Initially, TV Noe produced a joint Czechoslovak broadcast with the Slovak TV Lux. However, the joint project gradually became problematic because of the different goals of its participants: Noe aimed to be an ecumenically oriented "television of good news for everyone", while Lux wanted a Catholic television. This led to the interruption of cooperation in 2007 and the founding of a separate TV Lux in 2008. Over the years, TV Noe expanded its programming and distribution. It broadcasts daily from 6:00 to about 1:00 after midnight (between 1 and 6 it airs reruns of the previous day's morning programmes). The signal is distributed via the Astra 3B satellite (23.5° East, vertical angle 30°), the DVB-T2 multiplex 23, the internet, its own mobile app, and cable networks in many cities in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The broadcast licence is held by Telepace s.r.o. Since 2023 it has also broadcast on the NOE+ channel, showing older and new television programmes. In 2018 the station was awarded the Celestýn Opitz Award by the Order of Merciful Brothers for its exemplary care for the sick and needy. In 2019 it added the programme "Živě s Noe", supplemented once a month by "Noemova pošta". In September 2021 a new discussion programme with well-known personalities, "Dokořán", was launched, moderated by P. Marian Pospěcha, with Jiří Suchý as its first guest. In 2024 the station added the publicist programme "Rozumíme médiím?". A live broadcast took place for the twentieth anniversary of the start of television broadcasting on Saturday 9 May 2026, when a solemn mass in the Church of St. Wenceslas in Ostrava was celebrated by the emeritus archbishop of Prague and Olomouc, Mons. Jan Graubner.
